The joys of juicing

What to look for in a good juicer, plus a recipe for juice that boosts your immune system.

By Randy Taylor

The benefits of juicing are enormous and have been used for disease prevention and optimal wellness for years. In fact, juicing is the best method of ingesting an abundant amount of nutrient-dense, low-calorie goodness in just one glass. In no other way could you consume the equivalent of a pound of carrots and apples. In addition to the plentiful amount of minerals and vitamins that the body benefits from, juicing has also been shown to offer a large dose of fresh enzymes from the live food. Those enzymes can benefit digestion, inflammation and boost your vitality and energy.

Buying a juicer
When in the market for a high quality juicer, selecting the right one can be confusing. If you have priced out juicers recently, you are well aware that there is an enormous range in price. Here are a few tips to keep in mind for picking the right type and quality of juicer for your home.

Ease of cleaning
A juicer is an appliance that will typically be used on a daily basis. Because of this, it is important that it can be broken down and cleaned with ease either by hand or in the dishwasher. If not, your new appliance will soon become a kitchen item that is ignored. In addition to daily cleaning, a juicer should be deep cleaned a minimum of once per week.

Check length of warranty
High quality juicers are meant for daily use and typically offer warranties of five to 10 years. Warranties on lower quality juicers are often for 90 days to one year. With these types of juicers the blade typically wears out within six months or so and the motor is also at risk for burn out soon after the warranty expires.

Inquire about availability of replacement parts
Since your juicer could break down and require fixing, inquire about how easily accessible replacement parts may be. It is also important to ask about wait time for replacement parts (you do not want to be without a juicer for six weeks or more).

Investigate the type of juicer you are buying
There are many different types of juicers available on the market. For example, centrifugal juicers can create oxidation that degrades the nutrients in the fruits or vegetables. On the flipside, hydraulic press juices produce very little oxidation and are thought to make the highest nutrient dense juice. There are also masticating juicers that operate on lower speeds but also produce a higher quality juice because less oxidation occurs.

Check your counter space
A juicer is likely an appliance that will be kept on your counter for easy usage and cleaning. Before you buy the largest clunker on the market, make sure you have enough counter space to accommodate your new appliance easily.

In addition to the tips above, it is also important to get the right horsepower. A motor of approximately 450 watts or above is ideal.

When it comes to juicing, most colourful fruits and vegetables are suitable. From apples and carrots to beets and wheatgrass, the nutritional benefits are enormous. However, the best juice is often derived from firm and ripe produce. Whenever possible, try to use organic fruits and vegetables when juicing.

Here are a couple of juice recipes that serve two:

Apple carrot juice
-6 carrots
-3 delicious apples

Immune boosting juice

-3 carrots
-1 celery stalk
-1 apple
-1/2 beet
-1/2 handful of wheatgrass

This summer, enjoy juice as often as you can in order to reap the benefits both inside and out!
