General Category : Main Course

Tangy and satisfying, this homey dinner makes a nice change from the ordinary.

Ingredients

•

4 bratwurst or sweet sausages

•

3 tbsp (45 mL) honey mustard

•

¼ cup (50 mL) fresh bread crumbs

•

4 tsp (20 mL) butter, melted

•

1 onion, thinly sliced

•

2 cups (500 mL) sauerkraut, drained well

Preparation

Preheat broiler to high. Slice sausages in half lengthwise without cutting all the way through. Butterfly each sausage and place cut-side-down on a rimmed non-stick baking sheet. Place on top rack of oven under broiler and cook for about 6 minutes or until brown.

Turn sausages and spread evenly with mustard. Sprinkle bread crumbs evenly over sausages. Place pan on lower rack of oven and broil for 3 to 5 minutes or until topping is golden and sausages are cooked through.

Heat butter in a skillet set over medium heat. Add onion and cook, stirring often, for 5 minutes. Increase heat to medium-high and add sauerkraut. Cook, stirring often, for 3 to 5 minutes or until browned. Serve sausages over sauerkraut mixture.
