Finding it hard to gear up for your run, especially when it's cold outside? Here are some tips adapted from "Boost Your Motivation Now," a Runner's World magazine supplement:
1. Forget the loneliness of the long-distance runner. Join a running group -- every city has one. Or find a running buddy in your neighbourhood. 2. Don't compare yourself to other runners. There will always be someone who is faster than you.
3. Escape the expectations trap. If you are moping because you think you should be running farther every week, remember you are the one who creates these expectations.
4. If it's hard getting psyched up to run, take it one step at a time. Listen to upbeat music. Put on your running clothes and shoes and step outside to chat with a neighbour or mail a letter. Before you know it, you'll be running!
5. If you've been running daily but often feel unmotivated, try running every other day, or taking the same two days off every week. You'll look forward to your days off, and to your running days.
6. If you are too hungry to run, have half a glass of juice before your run and then reward yourself afterwards with your favourite healthy snack or meal.
7. If you are in a rut, plan a variety of workouts a couple of weeks in advance, and mark them on the calendar.
8. Use local scenery to your advantage. One runner used the characters he saw on his daily runs to build a spy novel. Another gathered ideas for her dream house from homes along the route.
