Take honourable steps to support a great charitable organization.

By Kelly Peckitt

Not only is walking a fun and healthy way to exercise, it's also an excellent way to raise money for worthy charities. Try something new and read below to find fundraising events near you.

Victoria International Walking Festival
April 21-23

Take part in this three-day walking festival full of entertainment, seminars, food and live music. Levels of difficulty range from 5 km for beginners, to 42 km for more experienced walkers. Participants can enroll in competitive or non-competitive categories. Registration is organized by day, so you can choose how many days you want to participate in. Each day's registration fee is $8. As a unique element to this event, participants may choose a charity with special meaning to them to donate their pledges to. Printable fund-raising forms are available on the festivals website. For more information visit: Victoria International Walking Festival

World Partnership Walk
May 28 (June 4 in Ottawa)

Earn money to help put a stop to world poverty by participating in this annual walk. This nationwide event includes scenic walks, music, food and information displays. Funds collected go to disadvantaged people in Africa and Asia. The more money you raise, the better chances you have to win rewards and prizes. For added incentive, every $100 you raise online entitles you to be entered in a draw to win a Honda Civic. Walks take place in Calgary, Edmonton, Kitchener, London, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Vancouver and Victoria. For more information visit: World Partnership Walk

Relay for Life
March to September
Nationwide

This spectacular overnight event that supports cancer research lasts 12 hours and involves teams of 10. Members take turns so that a team member is on the track at all times. When you're not walking you can take part in a variety of activities. The event starts with cancer survivors walking a victory lap around the track to start off the relay and once the sun goes down, hundreds of luminaries (candles inside bags) surrounding the track are lit in a tribute to those whose lives have been touched by cancer. Most provinces have at least 10 event locations. To find a event location near you, visit: Relay for Life
