4 signs of a dangerous diet

3. Diets that rely on a magic bullet approach
As a nutritionist, I often tell my clients that if there is a diet that claims to offer a quick fix "pill" or "potion" for fast weight loss, run in the other direction and run fast! While it would be wonderful news if a "quick fix, magic bullet" approach did exist -- it simply does not.

In addition, some of the diet pills that were previously on the market such as ephedra have been shown to cause ill effects such as high blood pressure and a racing heart rate.

4. Diets that offer exorbitant weight loss claims
There are certain diets that declare weight loss promises of eight to 10 pounds per week. Yikes!

While it is true that you can lose a fair amount of weight in the first two weeks of weight loss (you can lose four to eight pounds), this is partially due to water loss.

Following an initial drop in weight, healthy and normal weight loss results can range from one to three pounds per week depending on your activity level.

What works?
For this year to be the year when you finally reach your goal weight, it is wise to focus on weight loss principles that are based in science. Avoid quick fixes that are one-dimensional and overly restrictive.

Instead, learn about the "right" types of macronutrients to eat daily such as low glycemic index carbohydrates (like most fruits and vegetables, beans and, yes, even bread,) lean proteins and essential fats.

By doing so, you will arm yourself with the nutritional knowledge you need to take off excess weight and keep it off for good.
