If you are ever in New York City be sure your trip includes a visit to Les Halles restaurant where world-renowned chef and author, Anthony Bourdain, cooks up some of the best French brasserie food you'll find in the city. But if a trip to the big apple isn't in your future, don't despair. Bourdain brings his unmistakable bistro fare right into your kitchen with the release of his latest cookbook, Anthony Bourdain's Les Halles Cookbook (Bloomsbury 2004).
Bourdain's book features 110 recipes ranging from traditional favourites and house specialties, such as Steak Tartare and Coq au Vin, to more unique dishes such as Tripes "Les Halles." The book is also laden with striking photography that even includes an inside look at Les Halles kitchen and its staff. Bourdain's narrative is razor-sharp and his humour bold (in one tip he warns, "Don't even think about using Cool Whip or Reddi Whip. I'll know. I'll find you"). His instructions are clear and concise so if your dish doesn't turn out well, you can be certain the cookbook is not to blame (at least that's what Bourdain might say, judging by his witty writing style).
Add this cookbook to your collection and not only will you enjoy fine French cuisine, you'll also be entertained by the wording that colours every recipe.
*Other books by Bourdain include Kitchen Confidential and A Cook's Tour. Reviewed by Sarah Hatten
