There seems to be no end to the number of trendy dieting books coming out, which makes searching for that perfect one as torturous as actually sticking to the diet itself. Cholesterol Down by Janet Bond Brill (Random House of Canada Ltd., 2006) takes the guesswork out of finding that perfect reference book for those looking to lower their cholesterol.
Brill structures this book into easily digestible bite-sized chunks. The first part of the book answers your easy and not-so-easy questions, such as: What is cholesterol? How does this diet work? And: How is cholesterol absorbed from the intestinal pool into the body?
The second part is sliced into sections that reveal the nine foods your diet needs, plus an exercise plan. The nine foods the author recommends are: oatmeal, almonds, flaxseed, a soluble fiber supplement (such as Metamucil), beans, apples, margarine with phytosterols, soy protein, and garlic. Brill provides tips on adding these foods to your diet and a chart at the end of every section lists different kinds of products to search for. Fortunately, the section on beans also provides a sidebar on de-gassing this legume.
The appendixes at the back provide the practical help you need to successfully change your eating habits. They offer sample meal and exercise plans as well as two weeks’ worth of heart-healthy recipes like Walnut-Encrusted Salmon and Romanian Eggplant Caviar.
Janet Bond Brill is a registered and licensed dietitian with her own private practice in southern Florida.
