"If we are to understand war fully," writes author Zainab Salbi in her introduction, "we need to understand not only what happens on the front lines, but what happens on the back lines as well, where women are in charge of keeping life going." With this goal in mind, Salbi has compiled this volume of photographs, stories and histories of six of the most war-torn regions of recent years: Bosnia & Herzegovina, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Colombia, Afghanistan, Sudan and Rwanda.
Salbi is president and CEO of Women for Women International, an NGO that helps women in such countries rebuild their lives after war, providing them with financial and emotional support, job skills training, rights awareness and leadership education, and access to business skills, capital and markets. Many of the women profiled here have benefited from this support; Habiba of Kabul, for instance, received training in business, marketing and women's rights, and now spends her days managing Women for Women's local store.
The stories told here will bring tears to your eyes. But the overarching message is one of hope: hope that these women have told their stories so that others won't have to experience them for themselves. --Kat Tancock
