WHAT'S NEW

November's to-do list

10 ways to prepare for the holidays (and for winter) at a relaxed and stress-free rate.

By Natalie Bahadur

6. Sort through last year's Christmas decorations
Don't wait until you've got your tree set up in the living room to find out that last year's Christmas decorations just aren't going to cut it this year. Dig out your ornaments, make sure they're all intact and ensure you have enough wire hangers. Maybe you want to try a new colour scheme on this year's tree. Prepare your decorations in advance to avoid last-minute scrambling.

7. Buy new dancing shoes
Go on, you deserve it. Treat yourself to a new pair of shoes that'll see you through the holiday season. Suede, velvet and satin are all popular choices around the holidays, so add some verve to your wardrobe and get ready to dazzle.

8. Knit something warm and wooly
Whether you're a knitting newbie or a bona fide maven, pick up a pair of needles and while away the winter evenings. It's calming and relaxing. If you're any good, you might also find yourself knitting a few Christmas presents.

9. Sign up for dance classes
Holiday parties are just around the corner -- are you and your dancing shoes ready? Whether it's to dazzle friends at a party or simply to try something new (and get in some great exercise at the same time), dance classes are a fun way to spice things up. Need some inspiration? Rent Shall We Dance, starring Richard Gere and Jennifer Lopez, to get you in the mood.

10. Buy some hostess gifts
You never know when you'll be invited over to a friend's house at a moment's notice. Don't be caught empty-handed. Stock up on a few hostess gifts that are wrapped and ready to go, quicker than you can say, "Saint Nick."

Take this month one day at a time and you'll enjoy a less stressful approach to the typically frenzied month of December. A little planning can go a long way to maintaining your sanity -- but don't forget to think of yourself, too. (See suggestion #7!)
