The Accidental Housewife
By Julie Edelman
Whether male or female, young or old -- you've probably felt that drowning sensation when faced with the burdens of domestic duties: piling laundry, dust bunnies, filling the fridge, clearing clutter, scrubbing the shower . . . the list is endless. Gone are the days when a woman was expected to devote the bulk of her time towards maintaining a home. Now, regardless of age, sex, marital status or profession, we become what Julie Edelman calls "accidental housewives": people who discover they are the primary housekeeper of their household without much training or advance warning.

With mounting career expectations plus parenting responsibilities, we're busier than ever before with little time to clean up after ourselves. Edelman's book, The Accidental Housewife: How to Overcome Housekeeping Hysteria One Task at a Time (Ballantine Books, 2006), is as entertaining as it is insightful and it offers plenty of handy advice for successfully managing a modern household.

She gives you a list of handy cleaning supplies to have before tackling each room, decodes laundry symbols in an easy-to-follow chart, explains how to maximize your grocery shopping trips to minimize visits to the store and lists lots of other useful tips to get your home in order. Each section of the book contains buyer's guides, five-minute solutions and a "Housewifely Calorie Counter" (for both sexes) to make you feel that much better about getting it all done. To top it all off there's a "Mood with Food Guide" where she and wine expert Sandra Muller match food and wine to the different moods all accidental housewives encounter, such as "Over the Sink Mood", "PMS mood", and for moments of domestic ambition: "Martha mood". -- Colleen Tully
