Pro tips for pretty party makeup

Day-to-night makeup transformations can be fast and easy. Professional makeup artists reveal great ways to boost your 'pretty' for a holiday party.

Getting into the festive swing of things can be a challenge when you're still wearing an eight-hour workday on your face. Don't think it'll take another hour to glam up, though.

Start with just a couple of minutes to "touch up your concealer and refresh your complexion with a little powder," advises Paul Venoit, CoverGirl makeup pro and one of the stars of Star TV's "Look-A-Like." After that, turn to any of these expert tips to look fab in five more minutes or less.

1. Smoke up
For Chase Aston, international makeup artist for The Body Shop, a smoky eye is a two-minute move. He used silver and deep blue easy-glide shadows from the Sparkle Eye Palette 01 ($24.50), but if sparkle is a few years younger than you are, try more subtle shimmer shadows instead. Sweep a pale or medium shadow across your lid to the crease. Line along your upper lashes with black eye pencil -- a haphazard application is fine. Load up a Body Shop eye-shadow blender brush ($18) with a dark shade then blend it in a fat line over the pencil liner and into a sideways V-shape to emphasize the outer corner of the eye. Run the black pencil along the inner rim of your lower lashline and finish with a fresh coat of mascara.

2. Get in line
According to Paul Venoit, a little liner will add to your evening impact. If you're still wearing liner from your work day, trace over it with LineExact Liquid Liner Pen in Black ($8.99), or with black eye shadow on a wet angle brush, and "flick the end up slightly at the outer corner," he suggests. (CoverGirl EyeEnhancers 4-Kit Shadows in Drama Eyes, $6.99, includes a black shade.)

"Pump up lashes with a buildable mascara, like CoverGirl LashBlast ($9.49), and you're done."

3. Colourize
"This is where you want to play with trend colours," says Carmindy, makeup artist for TLC's "What Not to Wear" and author of Get Positively Gorgeous (Center Street, 2009, $23.99 hardcover).

To your refreshed day look, "add eye liner in the colour of the season and sheer gloss in a hot colour," she suggests. Think eggplant liner to make eyes sultry, or a berry stain for lips.

Try inexpensive products first "so if you're over it in a couple of months, you haven't spent much," she says. "If you decide it's you and you want to rock the look or colour for the next two years, then splurge a little."
