Sheer makeup for summer beauty

Lighten your makeup and let your skin glow this summer with expert tips from a makeup artist.

By Natalie Bahadur

Summer is a good time to lighten up. You start early with spring-cleaning routines to reduce clutter and clear up your living space but during the summer, the same principles apply to your clothes, food choices and, yes, even your makeup.

Sheer makeup is the hottest look for summer beauty but how do you master the makeup techniques behind this look? Adi Lando, a Sephora PRO team expert reveals tips and tricks to help you get that perfect barely-there look for summer.

Homemakers.com: Why is sheer makeup so popular in summer?
Adi Lando: Women enjoy feeling liberated in the warm summer months. Sheer makeup allows the skin to breathe and to be visible in the summer. Heavy textured foundations tend to create a thick appearance and sometimes even melt on the face.

HM.com: What kinds of makeup products help you to achieve a sheer look?
AL: Tinted moisturizers are the perfect solutions. The Stila brand is very light, allowing the skin to breathe with minimal coverage while maintaining a polished look. The texture is that of a light, oil-free liquid. This light powder sets the face, preparing for hot sticky days. For blush, a stain is a good alternative [to powder]; it's light and natural for the summer.

HM.com: Can you provide tips for getting the best makeup results?
AL: Be light-handed with your application. Use foundation brushes that help pick up the right amount of product. Start off light because you can always go darker if necessary. Choose one focal point to work on. For example, if eyes or lips are your best features, focus on that. Use products that are suitable for your skin type. Work in a well-lit environment.

HM.com: How do you prep your skin for makeup application? Are there different considerations for different skin types?
AL: Skin preparation is the most important part of your makeup application. There is no good makeup without good skin preparation. Make sure you choose the right skin regime for your skin type. This means if you have oily-to-combination or combination skin, use products designed for oily skin. Oil-free lotions are ideal products to use. If you have dry skin, a sheer moisturizer is appropriate.

HM.com: When it comes to makeup, what colours are on trend this season?
AL: One colour trend this season is safari, so when we think 'safari' we think of warm tones. The bronzed look is very big this summer. Bronzers come in different formulas such as liquid, powder, spray, cream and self-tanners.

HM.com: Are there any no-nos when it comes to wearing or applying sheer makeup?
AL: One of the mistakes that people often make is wearing the wrong product for their skin. Summertime is great for the sheer makeup look, but also for great-looking skin. The first step is to exfoliate your skin and get rid of the dead skin cells left over from a harsh winter season. Get yourself a good lotion, preferably oil-free. A serum would be great to hold moisture in your skin and don't forget your sunscreen. Invest in a good tinted moisturizer or light foundation. Apply it wherever you need. Keep it fresh looking.

Helpful tips:
- Use a waterproof eyeliner for lasting power. You can also moisten your favourite shadow with water and apply it to your lash line.
- Wear waterproof mascara to eliminate smudges under the eyes.
- When it comes to cheeks, apply a stain to the apple to create a long-lasting effect.
- Finish your look with the bronzer of your choice.
- Once you apply your lipstick or gloss, place a tissue over your lips, run your finger across the paper and then remove the tissue. This will help to get rid of the excess but will not take away the pigment.
- Last but not least, have fun with your makeup. If you make a mistake you can always start again.

HM.com: How should you incorporate sun protection into your makeup routine?
AL: The sun will cause skin to age faster so don't skip your sun protection. There are many ways to incorporate sun protection into your everyday makeup routine. You can buy a lotion or a cream that has the protection already in it. Make sure your foundation or tinted moisturizer has SPF in it. If not, you can always get your sunscreen separately, but don't forget to put it on! Lips should be protected as well. There are lip balms with SPF, which can be great add-ons. After all, this is the only skin we've got so let's take good care of it!
