There are more than 4,000 farms in Nova Scotia, which means plenty of farmers are looking to sell what they've grown. And they're working together to do so, through the Farmers' Markets of Nova Scotia Cooperative, a group that promotes markets across the province through their partnerships with each other.
By visiting the cooperative's website, you'll be able to find a market in just about any region. Not all farmers' markets are advertised this way, and you'll find many more by simply driving by their roadside stalls.
Here are some of the best markets you'll find in Nova Scotia:
Antigonish Farmers' Market 4H Barn, Exhibition Grounds 30 James Street, Antigonish Phone: (902) 867-7479 E-mail:farmersmarket@antigonishrda.ns.ca Website: www.antigonishfarmersmarket.com
Open: Saturday, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. (May to October)
Start your day at the Antigonish Farmers' Market with eggs and coffee at the Canteen, or satisfy your sweet tooth with homemade fudge or almond candy from the vendor stalls. A seating area by the food stalls is an inviting place to relax and enjoy your treats. The Kids Korner offers special activities to keep little ones occupied while you peruse certified organic vegetables and poultry along with crafts and woodworks.
Cape Breton Farmers' Market Sydney Marine Terminal, Government Wharf The Esplanade, Sydney Phone: (902) 564-2080 Website: www.capebretonfarmersmarket.com
Open: Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. (year-round)
If you're looking for the Cape Breton's Farmer's Market, don't look further than The Big Fiddle: The 45-foot high, 10-tonne steel monument to Cape Breton's musical heritage. The Big Fiddle, located on Sydney's Government Wharf, presides over the indoor market. Vendors come weekly to sell a wide variety of locally-produced items including natural highland beef, Berkshire pork, free-range eggs and fruits and vegetables. You'll also find fair trade coffee and chocolate, loose teas, handmade felt hats, Native handicrafts and candles.
Halifax Farmers' Market Keith's Brewery Building 1496 Lower Water Street Phone: (902) 492-4043 Website: www.halifaxfarmersmarket.com
Open: Saturdays, 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. (year-round) The Halifax Farmers' Market, which has been housed in the historic Keith's Brewery Building since 1983, is about to make some major changes. The market will move to a brand-new ecological building on the Halifax Waterfront and will be open six days a week, starting in 2008. While the new building, complete with a green roof, is being built, it's business as usual for the more than 100 vendors who do a brisk trade on Saturday mornings.
Considered to be the oldest continuously operating farmers' market in North America (since 1750), you'll find bedding plants, cut flowers and produce including berries, squash, beets, fresh herbs and wax beans. Vendors offer made-to-order treats such as stir-fries, omelets and fruit-filled crepes. Pick up seasonal decorations -- gourds and pumpkins in the fall, holly in the winter -- here.
Lunenburg Farmers' Market Lunenburg Daycare Centre Parking Lot Lincoln Street, Lunenburg Phone: (902) 543-7836 Website: www.lunenburgfarmersmarket.com
Open: Thursdays, 8 a.m. to noon (May to October)
One morning each week, the asphalt parking lot outside the Lunenburg Daycare Centre becomes the centre of activity for this seaside town. Vendors entice customers to their tents, selling plants, organic vegetables and fruits, fresh-baked organic pastries, smoked and fresh meats, locally made cheese, jams, jellies and more. Lunenburg, a fishing port, is well known for its artisans and there are plenty of unique items offered here, from hemp oil products to oil paintings, locally harvested sea salt to one-of-a-kind wood bowls.
Truro Farmers' Market Located in the covered parking lot between Outram and Havelock Street Phone: (902) 461-7782 Website: www.trurofarmersmarket.ca
Open: Saturday, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. (May 19 to October 27, 2007)
The Truro Farmer's Market, located in downtown Truro, is a Saturday morning gathering spot for locals and visitors alike. There's something for the whole family here -- from photo opportunities with a goat to home-baked dog treats and fair-trade coffee. Gardeners will delight in transplants, potted plants, perennials and more. Foodies can sample Bavarian sausage, smoked fish, wildflower honey and award-winning, locally made cheeses. And, of course, there are plenty of farm-fresh vegetables from Truro and surrounding areas, including peppers, heirloom tomatoes and sweet corn along with chicken, beef and lamb.
Nova Scotia is famous for its amount and variety of apples, and you'll find plenty of places to pick up a bag or pick your own bushel. Pears, strawberries, raspberries and Nova Scotia's provincial berry, wild blueberries, are also in abundance. The summer is a good time to pick up fresh greens, tomatoes, cantaloupes and gooseberries. From Cape Breton Island to Truro, Nova Scotia's markets are a mix of great food, fresh produce and lively entertainment.
