This is Billy. Born in 1990, he's a feisty Blue Iguana who's looking for a lady and -- a larger home.
Living in captivity at The Blue Iguana Recovery Program, Billy shares a breeding pen with Dorothy, a female Blue Iguana; but he's depressed, bored and restless as he longs to be released into the wild. There, he can entertain himself by fending off other males of his species as he claims his territory (that larger home he's seeking) while courting more females. Don't pity Dorothy. She'd like a few more dating prospects too because neither male nor female Blue Iguanas are monogamous.
The Program's goal is to conserve the species by breeding and releasing at least 1,000 Blue Iguanas into the wild. So far, they've kept 400 of the species alive -- a great success, considering that the species was facing extinction with only 10 to 25 of its kind alive in 2002.
