3. Fossils and rocks at Mistaken Point Near Cape Race at the southern end of the Avalon Peninsula is Mistaken Point. It's appropriately named for all the accidents that took place there when sailors often mistook the land for Cape Race, steering their boats right into the treacherous rocks here.
Today at the point, you can clearly see the rock layers that make up Newfoundland's foundation. If you climb down onto the rock's surface, you can see a layer that reveals the world's oldest fossils.
