6. Bird colonies in the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve Gull Island is one of four islands in the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve just south of St. John's on the eastern side of the Avalon Peninsula. The reserve protects the largest Atlantic puffin colony in North America. More than 260,000 pairs of the small sea bird nest in the reserve. They burrow in the soil on the island to make a protected home while their neighbours -- black-legged kittiwakes and common murres -- prefer to line the rock ledges below.
