Historically, Hawaiians lived in the thatched huts that prevail in Polynesia, called "hale" (pronounced hah-lay). They live in modern buildings nowadays, but there is an eco-resort on the island called Kona Village where you can experience "hale" living, pictured here.
The resort is not entirely without creature comforts, however. The interiors of each "hale" are standard hotel rooms but instead of air conditioning, they have ceiling fans. All the better to enjoy the warm climate, which is typically balmy and in the high-20s year-round.
Of course, Big Island has modern hotels and resorts as well, from the luxurious villa-style Four Seasons Hualalai to the low-rise Fairmont Orchid, to quaint family-run B&Bs like Palms Cliff house.
