Slideshow -- 10 must-see sights on Hawaii's Big Island

Discover the culture, landscape and activities on the largest island in Hawaii, the Big Island

By Helen Racanelli

Small one- and two-person massage huts or "hale" are often within soothing earshot of crashing waves or a waterfall, and are a welcome choice for spa-goers looking for a little relaxation.

The outdoor spa is a growing movement on Big Island, with many hotels, resorts and stand-alone spas creating outdoor experiences for their spa-indulging clientele.

Lomi Lomi massage is a flowing, long-stroke Hawaiian technique that most massage therapists practice on Big Island; it's a local specialty. Its roots are in the massage that hunters and fishers would have enjoyed to loosen cramped muscles after a long day's work. You can enjoy it at the hales of the Fairmont Orchid, seen here.
