Slideshow: Rebuilding New Orleans

Five Newfoundland women are dedicating their time to the poor and homeless of New Orleans, which still lies in destruction three years after Hurricane Katrina.

4. Sister Joan White and rose bushes
In September 2007, the Sisters opened the Rebuild Center in collaboration with the three other religious orders, the Vincentians, Jesuits, and the Hispanic Apostolate ministry.

The Rebuild Center is a one-stop place for help for the homeless and working poor. The homeless come here for meals and clothing, to take showers, use the restroom, get medical or legal help, get a new state ID, use the telephone, receive mail, and get help finding housing and jobs.

With all that, Sister Joan still makes time to water the roses at the side of Saint Joseph's Church.
