The Ant Bully
Warner Bros.' latest animated flick will have you thinking twice before you stomp on an ant -- Lucas Nickle learned the hard way. Lucas (voiced by Zach Tyler Eisen) is a kid who gets bullied by the neighbourhood punk and his fellow thugs. Looking for something he can bully in turn, Lucas happens upon an ants' nest. The problem is, ants are just as intelligent (if not more so) as humans, and Zoc (Nicolas Cage), the nest's wizard, concocts a potion that makes Lucas ant-sized so he can pay for his heavy-footed crimes. The colony's queen (Meryl Streep) decrees that Lucas will not be allowed to return to the human world until he learns to think like an ant, and your stock fish-out-of-water comedy plot begins. Themes of acceptance, bullying, loyalty and friendship are used to full effect, as Lucas and his six-legged buddies team up to take on an evil exterminator (Paul Giamatti) determined to wipe the colony out. Fellow A-list stars lending their voices are Julia Roberts, Lily Tomlin, Regina King and Bruce Campbell. The "It Takes a Colony" featurette explores the film-making process from a bug's-eye view.TV on DVD
Bones, Season One
Like your procedural with a heavy dose of humour? Check out Bones, Fox's crime drama that's inspired by the workings of real-life forensic anthropologist and bestselling novelist Kathy Reichs and packed with cool high-tech gadgetry offset by gallows laughs and sexual innuendo. Emily Deschanel ably carries the storylines as Temperance Brennan, a forensic anthropologist who solves crimes by working with the skeletons of victims. Along for the ride is former Angel star David Boreanaz as FBI agent Seeley Booth. Canadian Hart Hanson is creator and an exec producer, and provides commentary -- along with the cast -- on a handful of episodes. The doc "Bones: Inspired by the Life of Forensic Anthropologist and Author Kathy Reichs" does just that.

St. Elsewhere, Season One
Denzel Washington before he won an Oscar, Ed Begley, Jr., before Veronica Mars and Howie Mandel before he went bald. All were members of the stellar St. Elsewhere cast. The characters working at the Boston medical facility dealt with the grittiness of street life every day. Over its six-season run, the critically acclaimed drama was nominated for over 60 Emmy awards, winning 13. With a unique blend of medical drama, offbeat humour and imaginative storytelling, it paved the way for later TV classics ER and Chicago Hope.
