Broiled Grapefruit and Orange with Dark Rum

I decided to bring this dish – inspired by the broiled half grapefruits my late Scottish-American Auntie Jane used to serve – to our potluck "table." It's a refreshing and simple dessert that is quite welcome during the holiday season. For the prettiest presentation, use red or pink grapefruit. Note that the rum might ignite under the broiler, but the alcohol will burn off safely.

Ingredients

3 grapefruits (about 2 lb/1 kg)
4 oranges (about 2 lb/1 kg)
1 tbsp  (15 mL)  butter, softened
3 tbsp  (45 mL)  dark rum
1/3 cup  (75 mL)  packed dark brown sugar

Preparation

Cut off peel and remove pith from grapefruits and oranges. Over bowl, cut out sections from between membranes; drain juice (reserve for drinking). Spread softened butter onto 13- x 9-inch/3 L broiler-safe baking dish; arrange rows of alternating grapefruit and orange sections. (Make-ahead: Cover and refrigerate for up to 8 hours.) Just before serving, drizzle rum over fruit and sprinkle with brown sugar. Broil until sugar melts, about 3 minutes.
