9 autumn stews

Nothing tastes better on a cool fall evening than a bowl of nice, warm stew. Tossing some tasty ingredients into your slow cooker is simple, but if you're tired of the same old beef stew, you may find inspiration for something different with the Homemakers Test Kitchen's best stew recipes.

We have everything from a melt-in-your-mouth pork stew to more than one easy stew you can put together before your favourite sitcom starts and enjoy it by the end of your show.

1. Hot and Smoky Black Bean Stew
If you're in a rush, you can use canned black beans (drained and rinsed) in this Mediterranean-style stew. But freshly cooked beans have a much better texture and taste. Serve with brown rice or whole grain bread to make a protein-rich meal.

2. 30-Minute Cuban Pork Stew
Simmering less tender cuts of meat for long periods makes a succulent stew but here we use a tender cut for a quick meal.

3. Broiled Lamb Chops on Bean Stew
Since red meat is one of the best sources of iron, lamb is a delicious way to increase your intake. Here, both lamb and beans combine to give a healthy hit of iron in a quick, simplified version of a bistro classic that usually involves hours of braising. Add a green salad and whole wheat rolls for a complete supper.

4. Chickpea and Pepper Stew with Preserved Lemon
To make the preserved lemons called for in this tangy North African stew, you can buy them in Middle Eastern and other specialty shops. Serve with Bulgur Pilaf or whole wheat couscous.

5. Classic Chicken Stew
This creamy stew is similar to chicken pot pie without the crust. You can obtain a similar effect by serving it over crostini placed in the bottom of a soup plate. Add a tossed green salad for a complete and delicious meal.

6. Oyster Stew
This traditional Canadian east coast and New England treat is as rich as a stew, but it's really a soup. Serve with little oyster crackers.

7. Quick Pork Stew
This flavourful stew cooks in less than 10 minutes because we use tender, quick-cooking pork tenderloin. Serve with peas, carrots and mashed or boiled potatoes or buttered noodles for a special weeknight supper.

8. Red Lentil and Vegetable Stew
Based on a traditional Turkish soup, this delectable vegetable stew is made especially flavourful with the various garnishes: shredded fresh mint leaves, thinly sliced lemon and paprika olive oil.

9. Thai Pork Stew with Parsnips
In Thailand, this type of sweet pork stew often includes hard-cooked eggs and bamboo shoots. Here we bring it home with our own northern root vegetable, parsnips. If fish sauce is unavailable, you can use light soy sauce.
