Grand prize winner
Inez Gibbons, Ancaster, Ont.
This cake has been a light but decadent ending to many of the meals that I've prepared for dignitaries, aid workers and diplomats from southern Africa to southeast Asia.
My husband, Stephen, worked for CIDA, and for many years we lived in developing countries where we entertained important guests in our home.
When chocolate wafers weren't available, ginger biscuits or Maria biscuits became the main crust ingredient; local oranges sometimes took the place of clementines.
From Zimbabwe to Bangladesh, India to Jamaica, and back to Canada, this elegant cake has been the grand finale for many special meals.
RECIPE: Chocolate Clementine Mousse Cake
This winning entry, plus five runners-up entries, was printed in the December/January 2009 issue of Homemakers. Congratulations to Virginia Tupper, Kelly Rowland, Ann Mariner, Satwinder Bains and Grace Jamison. Here are few more great entries we loved.
The recipe that made me a star
Without a doubt, our family's favourite Homemakers recipe is Quick Cinnamon Rolls -- so easy to make and so delicious! Whenever I take them to work or share with friends and neighbours, I always get requests for this great recipe.
On a school snow day last winter, which coincided with Parent Observation Day for my youngest child's JK class, I baked a batch of cinnamon rolls and sent them in, warm, to my childrens' teacher with a note that read: "I didn't have to drive into work this morning, so I thought I would send in a treat for those who did."
They were so well received by the teachers. All who saw me that morning at the school stopped to rave about how wonderful the cinnamon rolls were and how much they appreciated such a warm treat on such a cold, snowy day. That morning, I was a star -- all because of Homemakers.
