There's nothing more pleasant than coming home to a house filled with the aroma of dinner that's ready to be served. Put any of these slow cooker recipes together in the morning before you head out the door and you'll be coming home to a savoury, delicious meal.

Chinese Pulled Pork Sandwiches with Hot and Sour Napa Cabbage
In parts of Southern China and in Taiwan, sandwiches of braised pork belly and pickled mustard greens are served in steamed buns – the inspiration for this East-meets-West treat.
Maple Mustard Pulled Pork
This pulled-pork sandwich is flavoured with a trio of ingredients that Canada produces more of than any other place in the world: maple syrup, mustard seed and, of course, Canadian rye whisky. As well as being convenient, slow cookers don't heat up the kitchen. If you don't have one, you can oven-braise the pork. Serve the sandwiches on whole grain buns with hot mustard, and dill or sour pickles on the side.

Duck with Sauerkraut
This Central European–style duck, flavoured with smoked sausage, apple, caraway and sauerkraut, slowly cooks to perfection in the slow cooker. For a final touch, the skin is given a quick crisping in a hot oven.

With a tasty cut of beef along with fragrant dried and fresh mushrooms, this ragout is heady with flavour. Serve over pasta or noodles, potatoes or rice.

I have a real soft spot for this creamy stew, which reminds me of chicken pot pie without the crust. I obtain a similar effect by serving it over crostini placed in the bottom of a soup plate. Add a tossed green salad for a complete and delicious meal.
Slow Cooker Irish Shepherd's Pie
The potatoes that are mashed later for the topping cook along with the lamb in this traditional Irish stew. For a leaner stew, use boneless leg of lamb rather than shoulder.

Light Beef and Chicken Stock
This is the stock for the Fondue Chinoise (see recipe link at bottom of page). Slow-cookers make flavourful and clear stocks without any bother (the stove top works well, too). For chicken or beef stock, double the chicken or beef quantities here and omit the other.
Seafarer's Slow Cooker Chowder
The salt fish in this slow-cooked chowder lends extra flavour to the broth and better texture to the fish. Although I generally avoid too much cooking of ingredients before they go into the slow cooker, softening the onion and leek makes for better flavour and can be done while you are dicing the other vegetables.
Autumn Beef Borscht
You can cut all the vegetables for this rich, Eastern European-style soup the night before to cook the following day while you're at work.

Chunky Black Bean Chili
Here is a great-tasting, stick-to-the-ribs chili that is perfect for a family dinner or casual evening with friends. The combination of milder New Mexico and ancho chili peppers gives the mix unique flavouring, and the optional fresh chili peppers will satisfy any heat seekers in your group. Serve this with crusty country bread, a big green salad and robust red wine or ice cold beer.
