Rich Spiced Applesauce with Pears Recipe
Rich Spiced Applesauce with Pears
Pears and spice add fragrance to this applesauce.
Ingredients
- 3 lbs McIntosh or Gravenstein apples peeled, cored and finely chopped
- 2 ripe pears, peeled, cored and cut in bite-size chunks
- 2 tbsp (30 mL) lemon juice
- 4 tsp (20 mL) granulated sugar
- Pinch salt
- 6 whole cloves
- 2 star anise
- 2 inch (5 cm) length cinnamon stick
Preparation
In saucepan, stir together pears, apples, lemon juice, sugar, salt, cloves, star anise, cinnamon and 2 tbsp/30 mL water; cover and simmer for 10 minutes.
Uncover; cook over low heat until pears are very tender and apples break down into thick sauce, 12 to 15 minutes. Let cool. (Make-ahead: Refrigerate for up to 1 week.) Serve at room temperature.
Makes about 2-1/2 cups (625 mL).
