Lacing up for a good cause
This fall, thousands of Canadians will take steps towards a future without breast cancer. Walks and runs in support of breast cancer research are taking place in several communities nationwide. These fundraising initiatives celebrate life, pay tribute to lives lost, and unite people who hope to reach a common goal: to win the battle against breast cancer.
CIBC Run for the Cure
The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure takes place on Sunday, September 30, 2007 in 53 communities across Canada. In a single day, more than 170,000 Canadians will participate in the 16th annual run in support of breast cancer research, education, and various awareness programs. From Kelowna to Charlottetown, it's likely there will be a run near you. Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer
The Canadian Cancer Society is bringing Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer to 40 communities across Ontario. The walk dates range from September 22 to November 4, 2007. This is a leisurely, five to 10 kilometre walk, and organizers encourage people of all ages to participate. You can register, become a volunteer, pledge a participant, or donate to the event online at www.cancer.ca. There's a $10 registration fee to participate and the fee is waived for children 14 and under.
Tri For a Cure
The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, in affiliation with Trisport Canada, presents Tri for a Cure, which invites participants to raise money for breast cancer research while competing in triathlon events. Check out the upcoming Niagara-On-The-Lake Duathlon, taking place on September 22, 2007. The event starts with a four-kilometre run, followed by a 23-kilometre bike ride on a scenic course, and finishes with another four-kilometre run. The pre-registration fee for the duathlon is $58. Vernon Run for the Cure
The 13th annual Vernon, B.C., Run for the Cure will be on September 30, 2007 at Clarence Fulton Secondary School. Join more than 1,000 participants for a one-kilometre or five-kilometre walk or run. The event began in 1995 when three local women came together to support the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, BC/Yukon chapter. Since its inception, the Vernon run has raised more than $520,000. Morinville Miles for Breast Cancer
This event is in its first year and is affiliated with the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. It will be held on September 15, 2007 in Morinville, Alta. Participants can choose from three or four routes, all of which range in distance. To register, call 780-939-5858 or 780-953-2579. Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon
The Breast Cancer Society of Canada is an official charity of the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon. The Toronto Waterfront Marathon takes place on September 30, 2007 in downtown Toronto. You can walk or run the full marathon (42 km), the half marathon (21 km), or complete the basic five km. You can also pledge a runner in support of Canadian breast cancer research. Registration ends on September 29, and you must be 18 or older to participate in the full marathon and 16 or older to register for the half marathon.
