Alzheimer's disease

4. Alzheimer's disease
According to the Alzheimer Society of Canada, about half a million Canadians suffer from Alzheimer's and related dementia. Diseases of the nervous system, such as Alzheimer's, took the lives of more than 10,000 Canadians in 2004.

What is Alzheimer's disease?
Although often mistakenly considered a normal part of aging, Alzheimer's disease is a progressive, degenerative illness that occurs when natural self-repair and self-healing mechanisms of the brain become overwhelmed, causing the destruction of vital brain cells.

Symptoms of Alzheimer's disease
There are several clues that indicate the onset of Alzheimer's disease:
- Memory loss that becomes frequent and affects daily functioning
- Difficulty performing familiar, lifelong tasks
- Losing simple words or substituting wrong words, making sentences impossible to understand
- Disorientation of place and time
- Decreased or poor judgment and difficulty with abstract thinking
- Misplacing items in odd places
- Unprovoked mood swings and significant personality changes
- Passivity and loss of initiative

Reducing your risk of Alzheimer's disease
Although you can't prevent Alzheimer's disease, you can reduce the risk or slow progression of the disease.
- Stay socially and mentally active
- Exercise regularly and follow a healthy diet
- Don't smoke
- Protect your head from injury

Thank you for the article regarding cancer. The reason for having cancer today because of all the carcinogens chemicals which are found in our skin care, hair care products and cosmetics. Our government and Can Cancer Society is not doing anything to prevent the use these chemicals and pesticides in our food. Prevention is the key not the cure.

I am surprised that Breast cancer is noted as being one of the most deadly forms of cancer and no mention is made of Prostate cancer, which impacts men every bit as much as breast cancer does women....The author is a woman writer for a women's magazine, which probably explains the bias.....Women cannot claim their health issues are ignored. The difference in funding raised for breast cancer research compared to Prostate should be an embarassment to society.

Dear! On the list of problems for illnes I did not see 1 Transfat Trans fat is 10 times wors for your halh then any other fat.. Trans fat is in every food ,meat, chess, milk even in solt and wather. Trans fat speed up proces of deposit some bed things in our veins an arrteris. You did not say anything about car emition gases. That gases contains sulferik ased and nitrogen ased. You dont want to tell the trou about a reall problems. You are teling people quit smoking, eat fruts an exercise and you will be helthi and live long. It is posible to eliminate tran fat and make cars not that dedly. Volvo build an engin to Swidish submurin. It is not generating sulfer oxide and nitrogen oxide. It is not noisy and can make 30% of power then any other engin. It is Stirling engin. Denmark ban trans fat complietly. Sorry for my speling. Stefan
