While you're out

You're all dressed up and ready for a party. But if you overindulge, the next morning you'll be spending time with your porcelain pal and wishing your cat had a softer step. Welcome to your hangover.

Of course, you can avoid a hangover altogether by not drinking excessively, but if it's too late, you can lessen the morning-after pain. Recovery from the effects of alcoholic drinks doesn't have to be so bad -- really.

Eat before heading out
Have a big meal. Foods high in protein and fat will slow the absorption rate of alcohol into your bloodstream. Accompany it with water to counter the diuretic effects of alcohol. A hangover begins with dehydration, so the more water in your system, the better.

Your liver breaks down liquor and escorts toxins out of your body to keep your blood-alcohol concentration down, so treat it right. "Try popping a B complex vitamin," says Jennifer Glazer, a Toronto-based naturopathic physician at the Naturopathic Clinic in Toronto. "It will help your liver deal with the excess work it has to do."

Screen drinks throughout the night
The type of alcohol consumed will affect your hangover's intensity. Congeners are naturally occurring impurities that darken and add fragrance to liquor, so it could be better to choose clear, colourless drinks. "Dehydration, electrolyte depletion, vitamin and mineral depletion, it's the congeners that are doing all this," says Rollin Riggs, publisher of The Hangover Handbook: 101 Cures for Humanity's Oldest Malady (Ingram, 1997), by Nic Van Oudshoorn. "You're still going to get a hangover, but it will be less bad with gin or vodka than with bourbon."

Be kind to your liver by having no more than one alcoholic drink per hour and the same type throughout the night. Pace yourself by alternating between alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, preferably water, or by hitting the dance floor or playing pool -- keep active to steer away from more drinking.

Once you're home

Rehydrate back at home
You had fun and you're ready for bed. Not so fast. Grab another big glass of water or a sports drink, like Gatorade, to replenish electrolytes. And don't pop any pills with it. Several studies have shown that acetaminophen and ibuprofen can irritate your spent liver.

Treat symptoms the morning after

"The hangover is a result of a temporary drug addiction," explains Riggs. "Many hangover cures include additional alcohol, to keep you from that cold-turkey feeling."

Hair of the dog may be appealing, but water and electrolyte-replenishing drinks are better, and less abusive. You'll also want to avoid coffee, another diuretic. If you have a headache, you can take some pain relievers now or place a cold, wet towel on your forehead to constrict throbbing blood vessels. Another option is a homeopathic remedy called Nux Vomica 30c, which also helps with nausea, says Glazer.

Finally, have something to eat. "Some people swear by a big greasy cheeseburger, because the fat lines your stomach," says Riggs. Burnt toast also seems to work, likely because the carbon filters impurities.

"Try some liver-loving foods such as carrots, beets, dandelions or artichokes," suggests Glazer. "Add some milk thistle seeds to your salads to help your liver recover from the abuse." Or chomp on a tomato, great for replenishing lost nutrients, especially if you've been throwing up.

If you vomit repeatedly or pass out, get to the hospital. If you're lucky, you're just dehydrated. Otherwise, you may have alcohol poisoning which can lead to brain damage and death.

In this day and age of alcohol being forced into every aspect of life, can we finally show some responsibility and find a way to NOT promote alcohol consumption? Articles such as this do nothing more than reinforce an irresponsible attitude towards alcohol that is already way to prevalent. This is just a sickening article.

This article about hangovers, how to avoid and/or cure was excellent. Though I ought to have learned by now (after 39 yrs of indulging) it had a couple of tips I didn't know. Of course, I do think about not indulging...:)

Simple and informative article!! Knowing what foods aid the liver is something all drinkers should know. Some of the information was new to me....who knew that a hangover was the "result of a temporary drug addiction?" I'll keep the burnt toast trick handy for my next nasty morning after!

A favourite of a couple of dozen people I know make Hangover Soup the next day - this consists of a big pot of water - throw in broken up hamburger preferably medium ground beef, onions, celery, one and a half cans of tomatoes broken up and when the water boils add macroni and cook on medium until macroni is cooked - it probably is the vitamin A in the canned tomatoes that does the trick but it works every time - I personally have used this soup since I suffered from my first hangover.

Taking pain relievers for the morning headache? Do not take anything containing acetaminophen (Tylenol). To make a long story short, it fights over a liver enzime with alcohol and the effects can be deadly.

Just for those people who are having a really bad hangover in the morning and NEED to head out, eating toast with honey on it will really help to soak up any extra alcohol in your system. If you need to go to work, this toast with some tylenol is an instant hit :)

I think the author forgot to mention one of the most important hangover cures; fresh air. Being a university student I have had many horrible hangovers, fresh air and ice cold, non-alchoholic, and non-acidic liquids seem to be whats works best for me. Thats my 2 cents! Everyone enjoy the holidays and cure those hangovers ASAP!

The article basically says to not drink, or at least not get drunk! if that was the way to go, one would probably have already done it!! (unless there is an abuse problem) however, the only way (and the article touches on it) to not have a hangover, and still get drunk (though never stupidly, pukingly, passing out-ly drunk, but super fantastically buzzed) is to chase every single drink you have with a glass of water. No dehydration=no hangover. If you eat before, you will spend too much money on alcohol that you don't need to! Happy New Year's!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I find that eating a little something before bed also helps alleviate hangovers.

I think it would be a great idea if the author or one of her colleagues came up with a dictionary of situations, such as a hang-over or to what eat if you feel fatigued, before you exercise etc., that you could look up to see what foods you should eat to make your body feel better or to maintain good health. They often have these types of books for when people are sick and need to look up a symptom but they should have them for the day to day situations as well. I really enjoyed reading the foods I should take to aid my liver in doing its job and it just got me thinking that it would be great to know what foods I should take to aid other parts of my body to do their job after I workout for example, or even which foods my body would benefit from most for breakfest, to start the day right. There is much nutritional knowledge out there and you read about it piece by piece in articles like this and simillar ones, such as foods that benefit your heart, but wouldn't it wonderful to be able to access all this information all at once in one big book?!

It's nothing short of a joke how people will do all they can to ban cigarettes and label them as "killers" while at the same time catering to everyone regarding alcohol. If you want to do mankind a sincere service, try eliminating all the articles preaching how natural and normal it is to consume alcohol. I have collected over 34 news headlines in 3-4 weeks on MSN dealing with the wonderful ways to make, choose, mix and serve your holiday guests the almighty booze. It's sickening to say the least. Try explaining this to those who were drunk when they became pregnant, families of those who have lost loved ones in drunken accidents, children of single parent families who have lost a mother or father because of alcohol, wives or girlfriends who have been beaten by drunken partners, emergency hospital staff who have to deal with these idiots and the list could go on forever. Mankind sure has their priorities screwed up when they can fight to ban one of the problems while promoting the other to the max. Shame on the entire lot of you!!!!!

if you don't want a hang over then it's pretty simple, just don't drink the alcohol, you can have just as much fun without over indulging, or by not even drinking at all!!!!!!

I'm not sure there can be too much emphasis on not taking Tylenol with alcohol. I am suffering the effects of that very thing. I have severe liver damage.
