Getaways in Quebec and B.C.

The Sivananda Ashram Yoga Camp
An hour's drive north of Montreal, in the Laurentians, this retreat centre offers weekend yoga getaways as well as month-long teacher training courses. You have a choice of staying in a tent, cabin or lodge. During your stay you will experience the five paths of yoga: proper exercise (asanas, or postures), proper breathing (pranayama), proper relaxation (savasan), proper diet (vegetarian), and positive thinking and meditation (Vedanta and Dhyana). Your day begins at 6 a.m. with meditation, followed by a discussion on the philosophy of yoga. There are two yoga classes of two hours each and another meditation session in the evening. Don't forget to bring a shawl for meditation and a bathing suit for the pool and sauna.

At this retreat, located in beautiful Kootenay Bay in southeastern British Columbia, guests can participate in dream yoga, karma yoga and mantra yoga in addition to regular hatha yoga and meditation sessions. Learn how to interpret your dreams by listening to your unconscious mind in the dream yoga classes. Perfect the art of selfless service through karma yoga -- this practice of lending a helping hand without expecting anything in return is a behaviour that can be easily adapted to everyday life. And mantra yoga teaches the ancient Sanskrit mantras that are repeatedly chanted to improve concentration and encourage deeper meditation. Can you say "Om"?

At the core of yoga is the intention to treat others and ourselves with utmost respect and dignity and to find calm and tranquility amidst the mayhem that surrounds us.

You cannot underestimate the positive group energy that exists at a yoga retreat, says Nicky Hazard of Tanglefoot Lodge. "The bonding that happens here at the lodge is because of the nature of yoga and meditation. Both practices are specifically designed to open the heart and mind, and create a sense of peace and love. Naturally, when you engage in this process with others, you want to share it with them; there is a desire to open further and experience the love that is inside all of us."
