Taking care of your body

To do
1. Get enough sleep to allow the body its most regenerative break.

2. Drink lots of water to keep your skin hydrated and supple.

3. Exercise regularly to improve mood, circulation and tone.

4. Eat antioxidant-rich foods, such as blueberries, to firm and protect skin against environmental damage at a cellular level.

5. Protect skin daily against signs of aging (or worse) due to UVA/UVB rays. Use SPF 15 or higher.

6. Extend time between hair-colour appointments with a home-dye kit for roots, such as Clairol Nice 'n Easy Root Touch-Up ($8.99).

7. Up hair's vibrancy and shine with hue-enhancing shampoo, conditioner and treatments. Try Sunsilk Blonde Bombshell or Beyond Burnette ($7.99 each); redheads look to Pantene Pro-V Blonde Red Expressions ($9.99 each) or John Frieda Luminous Colour Glaze ($14.99).

8. Keep brows in line. Tweezerman Slant Tweezers ($23) are tops for precision brow grooming. (It's tweezing, by the way -- plucking is for chickens.)

9. Curl lashes to make eyes look bigger and more awake. We like Shiseido's Eye Lash Curler ($16) for its rubber pad, which creates a naturally curved effect.

10. Line inside upper rims of lids at base of lashes with dark brown or black smudge- proof liner for lash oomph without a heavy-liner look.

11. Add a touch of shimmery white eye shadow at the tear duct area of eyes for extra brightness.

12. Line inside lower rims with a sheer white shimmer pencil, such as Clinique Cream Shaper for Eyes in Frosty ($17.50), for subtle wide-eyed glimmer.

13. Buff lips with an exfoliating stick, such as The Body Shop Lipscuff ($11.50), a damp cloth or soft toothbrush before balm or colour.

14. Protect lips from sun and elements with SPF-formula balm, gloss or lipstick.

15. Keep lip colour tidy with clear lip liner, such as Sally Hansen Invisible Lip Liner ($7.99), which takes the pressure off matching liner to lipstick.

16. Top lipstick with gloss to take years off in an instant.

17. Brighten your smile with a teeth-whitening kit, such as Crest Whitestrips Premium Plus ($54.99).

18. Give nails a cared-for finish with Essie's Cuticle Pen ($20), a cuticle moisturizer in no-drip click-pen form.

What beauty products to use

To use
19. Curl-enhancing creams, gels and serums to de-frizz and define waves and curls. Try Joico Curl Definer Crème/Gel ($18.99) or Redken Fresh Curls Curl Refiner cream ($20)

20. Straightening hair balms, such as Phyto Phytodéfrisant ($24), to speed blow-drying and stay sleek until the next shampoo.

21. Volumizing hair mousse and sprays to create full-bodied style. Pump up with AG Foam Weightless Volumizer ($17.95), or Alberto European Extrême Style Weightless Volume mousse ($5.49).

22. Gentle facial exfoliants, such as St. Ives Gentle Apricot Scrub ($5.99), Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant ($70), or YSL Instant Pur Natural Action Exfoliator Granule-Free ($58), to brighten skin without surface stress.

23. Concealer to banish shadows, redness and discolouration. You'll look younger and fresher, and need less makeup, too.

24. Foundation primer to help makeup glide on and last longer. Try Biotherm Base Magic ($24), or Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation ($44).

25. Chanel eye shadow, which has goof-proof sheer texture and great staying power. Try Chanel Ombre Essentielle Soft Touch Eyeshadow ($33 each).

26. Physician-recommended products to soothe sensitive and reactive skin, such as La Roche-Posay, Cliniderm (has hair care, too) and Avène.

27. Exfoliating body cream, such as Jergens Replenishing Vitamin E with beta hydroxy ($8.49) and NeoStrata Daytime Ultra-Smoothing SPF 15 with 10% Glycolic Acid ($35.99), which hydrate and de-flake skin at the same time.

28. Hardworking foot cream, such as Vichy Podexine Callus Corrector ($15.50), which contains salicylic acid to reduce calluses and soften skin.

29. Band-Aid Brand Blister Cushions ($6.50) and Anti-Blister Stick ($8.99) to protect and prevent painful blistered heels and toes.

30. Shoe liners, such as Foot Petals Killer Kushionz ($15.95) and Airplus for Her Love My Straps ($7.99). Comfy feet lead to a serene countenance -- beautiful!

Breakthrough skin treatments to try

Breakthroughs
Thanks to science and innovative thinking, these beauty blockbusters make looking great easier than ever.

31. Elizabeth Arden Prevage, a new serum to improve skin tone and the look of wrinkles and photo-damaged skin ($200).

32. Anti-hyper-pigmentation creams, such as Olay Definity Refining Lotion with UV Protection ($39.99), to reduce discolouration and increase luminosity.

33. Retinol, alphahydroxy acid and peptides, key anti-aging skin-care ingredients, to encourage the natural exfoliation process, minimize the look of wrinkles and enhance the complexion.

34. At-home derm kits for slightly higher-intensity skin resurfacing with gentle microdermabrasion and peels to soften fine lines and rev up skin's glow.

35. Pedicure tools, such as Revlon's Flexi-Buff Foot File ($14.95) and Sally Hansen's Side Cut Toenail Clip ($6.99), to make the home-pedi a much easier job.

36. Foundation, which is now a technologically advanced hero, from wrinkle-buster types to formulas such as Almay Smart Shade ($18.99) and Cover Girl TruBlend ($13.99), two that take the trial out of finding the right shade. Try the darkest TruBlend on the back of your pale hand to see what we mean.

37. La Roche-Posay Cicaplast, a soothing gel with Madecassoside, to heal skin irritations and cuts faster than the usual antibiotic cream ($18).

38. Moisturizers with a touch of self-tanner for face and body, for vacation-like colour sans streaks or damage. We love Olay Body Touch of Sun ($9.99).

39. Salicylic acid and benzoil peroxide, proven acne fighters, to keep uncomplicated breakouts in check and send spots packing.

40. Cargo Cosmetics' award-winning packaging: ColorCards, eye shadow embossed on a thin, flat card ($28 per tin of 28), and DailyGloss, a 30-day supply of lip gloss in tear-off blister packs ($12). Bonus kudos for Plant Love, the company's brilliant botanical lipstick in entirely biodegradable packaging, including the corn-based polymer tube ($20).
