The final piece of the wardrobe puzzle

5. Jeans
Why they're essential
"A dark denim, either black or blue, works as well for business casual as it does for weekend wear," says Nadler.

What to look for: The right rise (from crotch to waist), so they sit comfortably on your hips. You don't want too low a rise or you'll get "muffin top" spillage over the waistband. "Lean toward a wide leg for a trouser-like fit," says Nadler.

Ways to wear and pair jeans
- With plain pumps for business casual days, then with flip-flops for the weekend.
- With a PWB and a jacket.
- With a PWB and suit jacket topped with the trench.
- Untucked with a belt over a PWB.
SHOPPING TIP: "Finding the right jeans is a matter of trial and error: be patient," says Nadler. "Once you've established a style that fits well, hit the sales racks -- you'd be surprised what you can find."

The key to successful shopping when you're on a recession-sensitive budget is to "pick classic pieces that never go out of style," explains Nadler. "If they're neutral in colour and well made, you'll always be able to count on them for seasonless mixing and matching."
