One piece that goes with every outfit

When your budget is tight, there's no spending on fickle fashions that are in today, out tomorrow. Instead, count on a core of mix-and-match classics you can dress up or down.

Erin Nadler, fashion consultant and president of Better Styled, outfits professionals of all ages in her midtown Toronto office-cum-wardrobe-warehouse. With a knack for enhancing every body type, Nadler chooses from Canadian and European lines to help clients pull together casual and business chic outfits.

The following five wardrobe essentials, according to Nadler, will stylishly see you through the financial fallout and beyond.

1. A perfect white blouse (PWB)
Why it's essential
"There's nothing fresher or crisper than a classic white blouse," says Nadler. "It provides great pop no matter what your complexion."

What to look for: A fitted style with clean lines. "Think thick and slightly stretchy," says Nadler. You don't want your bra to show through, and the stretch will maintain shapeliness.

Ways to wear and pair a white blouse
- As a "jacket" unbuttoned over a tank, and paired with jeans or capris.
- Buttoned up under a business suit or trench coat.
- Buttoned up and tucked into jeans with a chunky or colourful belt for casual outings.
- Under a black dress -- jumper style.
- With cropped pants and summer-sleek pumps.

FITTING TIP: To avoid button-over-the-bust gaps, Nadler suggests buying one size larger. "Then have a tailor take in the piece at the sides to maintain fittedness."

2. A classic black pantsuit
Why it's essential
You'll have a polished outfit to see you confidently through the workday or job interviews, plus you'll have separates to combine with items already in your closet.

What to look for
- Suit styling: Invest in a classically clean suit, avoiding lots of detail. "If you choose a seasonless (not 100 per cent wool) wrinkle-free fabric, the suit will be your best travel companion," says Nadler.
- Jacket best bet: "If you're bustier, stay away from one-button styles. Two buttons are good," explains Nadler. "Make sure you can do up the jacket so you'll be able to wear it open and closed."
- Pant best bet: Wide-leg, not straight-leg. "A wide leg gradually falls away from the hips, making you look longer and leaner," suggests Nadler.
Ways to wear and pair a black pantsuit
- Combine the suit with a PWB or other blouse you already have.
- Swap the pants for jeans or charcoal-colour pants.
- Dress up the jacket with a brooch, colourful scarf or chunky necklace.
- Slip on the jacket over a black turtleneck and scarf, combined with jeans and your favourite belt.

TAILORING TIP: "Most women's hips are larger than their waist, so we often get that annoying gap in the back of pants," says Nadler. "Have a tailor take in the waistband. It's cleaner, and will look made for you."

3. A trench coat
Why it's essential
"It's the perfect layering piece throughout spring and fall -- over a tank, suit jacket or blouse," says Nadler.

What to look for: Single or double breasted, knee length, with a belt. It should be roomy enough to wear over a suit jacket but you still want that hourglass shape when you tie the belt.

Ways to wear and pair a trench coat
- Over a suit by day, or a black dress by night.
- Topping a turtleneck or colourful scarf, with the collar flipped up.
- With the collar of a PWB over top of the coat collar.
- Swap the coat's belt for a thick one from your closet.
- With blue jeans and a PWB.
- With your black suit, or just the black pants combined with a turtleneck and a pop of drama from a chunky necklace.

STYLE TIP: To get what Nadler calls "a chic Audrey Hepburn look," tie the belt in a knot on one side (don't use the buckle holes).

4. A black dress
Black dresses: Jones New York, $99 and $129; The Gap, $58. Nadler also spotted great styles at Zara ($39.95) and Jacob ($69.99)

Why it's essential
From day to evening, you can mix a black dress with blouses, jackets and cardigans you already have in your closet; and it's a cinch to reinvent with accessories. What to look for: "The shift style fits best," says Nadler. "Choose a classic cut -- to the knee or slightly below -- in a fabric that's soft to the touch but has stretch. Think fitted, not tight; you want to be able to layer underneath it."

Ways to wear and pair a black dress
- With pearls and topped with your trench for evenings out.
- With a PWB layered underneath it -- jumper style -- for work.
- With a belt over top and knee-high boots.
- Under a neutral or bright-coloured, textured jacket.
- Topped by a print or solid-colour cardigan with three-quarter-length sleeves.

FOOTWEAR TIP: For the perfect black shoe for the dress and other outfits, Nadler suggests a mid-height stiletto. "The best bet is a slightly pointed toe -- it will never go out of style."

5. Jeans
Why they're essential
"A dark denim, either black or blue, works as well for business casual as it does for weekend wear," says Nadler.

What to look for: The right rise (from crotch to waist), so they sit comfortably on your hips. You don't want too low a rise or you'll get "muffin top" spillage over the waistband. "Lean toward a wide leg for a trouser-like fit," says Nadler.

Ways to wear and pair jeans
- With plain pumps for business casual days, then with flip-flops for the weekend.
- With a PWB and a jacket.
- With a PWB and suit jacket topped with the trench.
- Untucked with a belt over a PWB.
SHOPPING TIP: "Finding the right jeans is a matter of trial and error: be patient," says Nadler. "Once you've established a style that fits well, hit the sales racks -- you'd be surprised what you can find."

The key to successful shopping when you're on a recession-sensitive budget is to "pick classic pieces that never go out of style," explains Nadler. "If they're neutral in colour and well made, you'll always be able to count on them for seasonless mixing and matching."
