Hot winter accessories for any budget

When it comes to winter fashion, it’s not just about the big and bulky essentials that’ll see you through the season. Accessories can take your winter wardrobe from drab to fab by adding a sense of personal style and injecting bright, bold hits of colour.

So, what’s hot this season? Adrienne Shoom, head stylist for Joe Fresh Style gives you the lowdown.

According to Shoom, if you want to stay on-trend this season, you should invest in:
- A great pair of boots to keep you très chic during the winter months. A rubber sole wedge is perfect.
- A snood or circle scarf to protect you from the winter chill.
- A pair of leather gloves with an 80s edge. Consider stud detailing.
- A pair of long knit gloves.
- A statement necklace. This works with the little black dress at parties, or dress it down with a T-shirt, cardigan and pair of boyfriend jeans.

The trends
Shoom breaks down the trends, providing simple suggestions for getting the look this season:

Outerwear
This season, I think the snood is the new scarf. Look for chunky knits, prints, fur or faux fur to dress up any winter coat.

Leggings
Leggings are haute, haute, haute! But trade in the old 80s oversized T-shirt/leggings look for the new 80s-inspired trend: Classic white shirt, long jacket and a rocking pair of ankle boots.

Tights
When unsure, Shoom recommends black opaque tights. They always look modern.

Hot colours
Look for tans, caramels and chocolate colours. Consider a luxe camel topper or a dark brown leather bomber.

This season, black is back again. Bright colours look modern when paired with black. Go for a single colour against black.

This season, go for the gold with a gold sequin dress, strappy gold heels or bold jewels.

Patterns and embellishments
Look for masculine fabrics houndstooth and tweed -- but in feminine shapes!

Leather, sequins, studs, beads, ruffles and pleats are key embellishments this season.

Winter 2010's best looks
According to Shoom, the best looks for the season include:

Sweater dressing: layered knits like chunky knits and fine-gauge knits.
Leather: Think motorcycle jackets, blazers and leggings.
Classics revisited: Nothing beats a white shirt.

Key pieces for winter
Shoom suggests:
-A grey cardigan
-A statement coat: A tartan wool topper or a down wrap coat
-The little black dress: Always looks modern
-The new suit: Try a tux for party season
-Skinny pants or leggings
-A white shirt: Can be worn with almost everything
