5 bras every woman should own

According to Gallinger, another common mistake women make is wearing a band that is too big because they think it should be loose. It's important to wear a proper fitting band so it can help give the cups more lift. "Support should come from the band, not the straps, so if you are feeling discomfort check your band size first," recommends Thompson.

Before buying, try on a bra and set the hook on a middle clasp: that way, you can adjust its tension according to whether you need more or less room and it can allow for some weight loss or gain over time.

Wearing the right bra under certain garments can make all the difference. According to Gallinger, here are the five bras you should have in your wardrobe:

1. A seamless bra. Its smooth, rounded shape works well under knits, T-shirts and sweaters.
2. A seamed bra. Its defined shape helps to fill out darts, enhances tailoring and improves fit under blouses, jackets and dresses.
3. Strapless or convertible bras. To wear under strapless or backless garments or with clothes with a halter neckline or spaghetti straps.
4. Sexy bras. For figure-enhancing curves under low-cut garments.
5. Sports bras. For adequate support under active and exercise wear. Intensive wear, sweat and frequent washing can quickly make your sports bras wear out so make sure to replace them when they show signs of wear or don't offer enough support.

Get a bra fitting!
Gallinger says that a lot of women are nervous to get a bra fitting so they avoid it for longer than they should. She recommends getting a proper bra fitting at least once a year because many factors can affect your bust size, including: menstruation, menopause, medication and a new exercise regimen.

Before you take the plunge and meet with a bra-fitting professional, say goodbye to the favourite stand-by bras in your wardrobe. Because once you own a bra that fits just right, you can never go back to those ill-fitting bras.
