Fall 2008 hair trends
For many, September is more of a "new year" than January. As summer draws to a close, kids head back to school and the air gets crisp once again; there's no denying that you're about to usher in a new season, leaving summer behind for another year. And for many of us, the perfect way to begin this new season is with a new look.
So, what's new in hair trends for fall 2008? Award-winning Joico hairstylist Dorissa Cerven reveals hot looks in locks this year.
Homemakers.com: What are the hot hair colours for fall?
Dorissa Cerven: Whether warm or cool, the trend is all about hair colour appearing lush, rich and saturated. No more faded summer hair. If you don't want a big colour change, use a semi- or demi-glaze to add depth and shine. Applying lowlights can quickly and effortlessly add fall tones to summer blonde hair.

HM: Are highlights/lowlights in style? Or rich solid colours?
DC: Colour should appear more solid, however multi-tone hair is still hot. The key is to avoid stripy, choppy colour. Tones that are earthy in nature are a sure hit this season. Some of my favourites are deep coffees, toasted hazelnut browns, burnt coppers and soft buttery caramel blondes. However, this season also boasts a more high-tech, mod colour palette. This can be worn both solid or in well-blended foil placements. Tones such as deep blackened amethyst purple, port wine reds, cool nordic and soft silver blondes are sure hits for fall colours.
HM: Are there any celebrities sporting the newest, hottest hairstyles?
DC: Texture, movement, structure and volume sum up the fall cut and style images you'll be seeing this season. Music artist Rihanna's short tailored cut with a longer, disconnected fringe is high-tech mod, while actresses Katherine Heigl and Kate Hudson's long, airy layers with soft waves keep the bohemian look current. Actresses Selma Blair and Katie Holmes' deconstructed bobs are becoming a staple look in the salon.
HM: What trends are we seeing in hair length this season?
DC: Although all lengths will be popular this fall, you will see a trend of longer hair moving up to above the shoulders.
HM: What advice do you have for women who want to stay on trend with their hairstyle?
DC: Put down your flatiron and let your hair be fuller and freer. Waves will make your current style look fresh. You can achieve this by blow-drying hair with a volumizing hair product like Joico's Body Luxe Design Foam and using a large barrel iron to chaotically place curls. Then, sculpt the curls with your fingers, using Joico's Design Collection Molding Putty. This look should not appear perfect, so it is simple for even the most novice stylist.
