Fashionable fitness wear
Some people resolve to get off the couch, get into the gym and get in shape starting Jan. 1. Others find that spring is when they'll shape up, in time to see results by bathing suit season, and yet others find September is a good time of year to put their resolutions into motion, after summer holidays.
Whatever time of year you commit to physical activity, you know it's important to be active in order to stay healthy. But finding the motivation can sometimes be pretty darned difficult. Here's help: Get a new wardrobe of stylish workout wear. It certainly isn't going to solve all your problems but it's definitely a start!
And, as Adrienne Shoom, head stylist for Joe Fresh Style, says: "If you look good, you will feel good. It might even inspire you to work out harder."So what are the hot looks this year? Shoom fills us in on the details.
Fabric
Look out for micro/poly/jersey blends. According to Shoom, this new fabric is lighter than others typically used for workout wear and has a natural wicking ability to keep sweat off your body -- keeping you cooler while you work out.
Colour
"Black is always chic and always slimming," says Shoom. "But for some fun, add a hit of colour. This season, try purple."
Styles
"Layering tees and tanks are new for 2009," says Shoom. There are also plenty of pant silhouettes to choose from: wide-leg pants and capris, wide-leg shorts, running shorts and yoga shorts. Try the style that suits your body type as well as your workout.
Shopping tips
Before you hit the stores and hit the ground running, Shoom warns to choose items that are going to work for your workout. "Don't choose a running short if you are going to a spin class," she says. "Try a bicycle short and find a length and style that suits your body type."
Don't forget your body shape when choosing your pieces. If you're concerned about hiding your middle, Shoom suggests a drape-y tank and leggings. Proud of your biceps? Show them off with a body-conscious tank and wide leg pants, she says. "It's your workout; make it a good one!"
5 DOs for shopping for workout wear
Here are some things to consider before you head to the check out counter.
DO find workout wear that fits. Leave your baggy sweats at home, Shoom advises.
DO layer lightweight tees and tanks; it's the perfect way to camouflage problem spots.
DO dress in one colour from head to toe for a longer and leaner silhouette.
DO wear black; it never goes out of style and is chic and modern.
DO leave the oversized T-shirt and leggings for the disco!
