The tousled bob

The tousled bob
Straight-haired women have it easy with the sleek bob; the tousled version is the no-brainer bob for women with naturally wavy hair. Fear not if you have straight hair, though -- this look doesn't take much extra work, and it's a charming change from sleek.

1. Whether your hair is straight or wavy, this time start with a shampoo and conditioner that encourages curls. Try John Frieda Frizz-Ease Curl Around shampoo and conditioner (300 mL, $9.99 each at drugstores).

2. If you have straight hair, mist on styling lotion such as Bumble and Bumble Styling Lotion (50 mL, $10) and blowdry as usual.
If you have wavy or curly hair, apply anti-frizz cream such as Redken Fresh Curls Curl Refiner cream (250 mL, $20.49 at select salons), or Dove Intense Frizz Control Cream (113 g, $6.49) to damp hair and comb through with a wide-tooth comb. Flip hair over and gently use a towel to scrunch the curl back in and blot excess moisture at the same time. If you have wavy hair, you're almost done: Dry using a diffuser on low heat, or allow hair to dry naturally.

3. For straight or curly hair, use hot rollers to create waves or to loosen tighter curls. Section hair randomly, mist each section with light hairspray, then wind hair onto large size rollers. Remove when they've cooled, then run your fingers through your hair a couple of times to loosen the waves.

Hair with style cut right into it
Most women with long hair gasp at the idea of going short. For some reason, long locks are seen as more versatile, a perception belied by the number of women who only ever wear their hair in a boring ponytail (some ponytails aren't boring at all, but that's another story -- click here for 5 steps to a fab faux-hawk ponytail). Think of the bob as hair with the style cut right into it. Whether you wear it straight or wavy, the season's bob is a cut with versatile built-in style.
