How to get that perfect glow

Makeup trends don't often change much from year to year. Unless you start to wear green lipstick or (gasp!) forgo mascara altogether, your makeup routine might not see a makeover for years; and it's typically not a surprise to see what new makeup products show up on drugstore shelves from season to season. But times are changing.

Spring 2009 makeup trends are going to be a bit different from seasons past. Ready for a makeup shake-up? Check out some of the new makeup trends for this spring.

According to Jane McKay, senior artist at MAC Cosmetics, this season's look is less refined than the looks of days past and one of the most notable trends for the season is an imperfect, smudgy look for eyes. "It's a smoky eye," says McKay. "Black, black and more black. Rather imperfect, smudged and drawn out not up. This look involves lots of rimming in the eye."

How to make your skin glow
And glowing, luminous skin is the perfect partner for this dramatic eye look, explains McKay. But first you'll need to prep your face. "Exfoliate skin to shed dead skin cells and to help skin glow and renew itself," she says. "Start with an SPF moisturizer, apply MAC Strobe cream moisturizer to help plump up the superficial skin cells and to even out the skin's texture and skin colour. Less foundation will be required as the Strobe cream moisturizer has light-reflecting pigments."

Cover dark circles under eyes with concealer
Next up: Use concealer to even out the darker colour under your eyes. Use a warm shade of concealer to colour-correct unwanted grey shadows.

Then highlight the center of your face by sparingly applying powder in a line from forehead to chin; choose a colour that's one shade lighter than your skin. This highlights shadows and "opens up" your facial features.

Finally, McKay suggests spraying finished makeup with a setting formula like MAC's Fix + Spray. "This moisturizing spray adds even more humectants to create luminosity and correct powdery dry surfaces," she says.

A little bit natural and a little bit dramatic, this look's result is simply gorgeous.

Pro tips for great makeup application

Insider information from a makeup expert
Makeup artist Jane McKay answers a few more questions about what's hot for spring 2009:

Homemakers.com: What should every woman carry in her makeup bag this spring?
Jane McKay: Golden bronzing powder. Apply to sculpt the face when contouring the cheeks. Pink and peach lip-gloss.

HM.com: What new colours are hot for the season?
JM: Corals, pinks. Think about muted Easter egg colours for shadows, blush and lips. Try wearing brown eye liner so it creates smudgy, slept in- looking eyes.

HM.com: What about nail colours? Anything new?
JM: MAC has a fantastic peppermint green polish called Peppermint Patti. It goes perfectly with the Easter egg colour trend.

Makeup DOs and DON'Ts
Jane McKay offers up the golden rules of wearing the trends this season:

DO bronze intelligently. Strategically place bronzer on the face. Don't wash the whole face with bronzer as it may look one-dimensional and flat.

DO wear moisturizer. Start with an SPF and add more layers. It really works to help plump, smooth and even skin texture.

DON'T apply your makeup like you've "always done". Try something new. Remember, you can always wash it off if you don't like it.

DO let your creamy brown liner run and smudge a bit.

DO curl your lashes to lift the eye up and out.

DON'T forget to exfoliate. It makes a world of difference for dry, dull, blemished or aging skin.

DON'T forget to add pretty colours to your makeup palette. They will pick up your mood.

DO add a soft pink or peach blush only to the apple of the cheek.

DON'T forget to blend. A gradation of colours always looks better than overly sharp or hard lines.
