What's hot in boots this fall

Living up here in this northern Canadian climate, finding the perfect boots for fall is a worthwhile endeavour. They’re a basic necessity during the chilly months but let’s admit it: while we want to be warm, we do want to be stylish, too. So how do you find that perfect piece of footwear that merges both form and function together perfectly? We checked in with Lara Ceroni, Senior Editor of ellecanada.com to find out what’s hot in boots for fall 2009.

The bootie: A step in the right direction

According to Ceroni, the biggest trend in boots this season (and a wardrobe must-have) is the bootie – a short boot that comes just above the ankle bone and has a stacked heel. “The best part about these boots is that you can wear them with virtually anything: pants, skirts, dresses,” says Ceroni. “They have a very downtown, urban vibe and, believe it or not, they're incredibly comfortable.”

While Ceroni acknowledges that runway options like those showcased by Michael Kors and Isabel Marant this season are unreasonably priced for most of us, she points to large retailers who offer affordable knock-off options that are just as chic. Try: H&M, Aldo and Guess.

The tall boot: Do you dare?

“This fall, tall boots have risen above and beyond any height we've ever seen before,” says Ceroni. Forget mid-calf! These boots are riding well above the knee, even heading for mid-thigh. The look is almost like leather leggings, explains Ceroni, adding that this is one trend that’s definitely not for the faint of heart.

“Rodarte showcased their version on the fall runways and although they’re a spectacular fashion statement, not too many women under six-feet could pull these off,” she says. “But that’s the best part about trends: They're not for everyone. Stick with tall boots that go to your calf. Trust me. You’ll get so much more wear out of them.”
