Erase pen marks and make wooden surfaces shine

5. Erase pen marks on fabrics
"One of the most annoying stains you can find on clothing is a pen mark," notes Bousfield. "To remove pen or marker stains, try applying hair spray on the stain and rub. Then, wash the article of clothing as normal, and the stain should disappear."

6. Put the fluff back into your pillows
"To refluff pillows or polyester-fill duvets, place three clean tennis balls in the dryer with the pillows or duvets and run for a few minutes," recommends Josephine Bousfield.

7. Glass act: Hairspray on mirrors and windows
At the Hotel Monteleone, executive housekeeper Paulette Sable recommends using very hot water to remove sticky and stubborn hairspray from mirrors and windows.

Best Western's Josephine Bousfield recommends wiping away the offending hairspray with nail polish remover.

8. Dust-free vinyl shades
Mary Ann Rodino's quick and simple tip for cleaning vinyl shades is to use fabric softener dryer sheets.

9. So long to scuff marks on waxed floors
Sandy Gough, executive housekeeper for The Sagamore in Bolton Landing, New York, recommends using a pencil eraser to remove heel marks. Simpler yet, affix a tennis ball to a stick and rub the tennis ball over the heel mark.

10. Wooden surfaces that shine
Hot food plates, when placed on wooden surfaces such as countertops, can leave a cloudy film behind. To restore the beauty of the wood, says Rodino of The Spa at Norwich Inn, rub in spirit of camphor, going with the grain.

Spring-cleaning doesn't have to be time-consuming or difficult, and these tips from industry pros should make this year's efforts quicker and easier.
