Fun Valentine's Day date ideas

From heart-festooned department stores to specials on chocolates and roses, it can seem like Valentine's Day is entirely controlled by the holiday marketing machine.

It's time for couples to reclaim the holiday and put a stop to the formulaic chocolates/flowers/teddy bear routine, says Toronto Sun relationship columnist Valerie Gibson, a regular TV and radio commentator on love, sex and relationships. "I think we've all fallen into the Christmas trap where you think if you buy enough stuff, it fills up the season," says Gibson, the author of Cougar: A Guide for Older Women Dating Younger Men (Key Porter Books, 2001).

Here are five innovative ways to inject passion back into the day for lovers:

1. Learn a skill and try it out.
Take a few beginner classes in massage therapy and surprise your honey with the royal treatment: lotions, soft candlelight, romantic music and a demonstration of what you've learned. Or enroll in cooking lessons and then prepare a lavish meal for your partner, or learn to play an instrument and then surprise your mate with a live serenade.

"I knew one lady who took piano lessons, and when (her husband) came home she was playing their piano," says Gibson. "She was playing some romantic melodies. It was such a sweet thing."

2. Acquire a new skill together.
Joining a class with your partner may require a bit more planning, but the shared time and commitment would be worth it. It could include signing up for salsa or ballroom dancing lessons, taking art courses together or taking a weekend crash course in rock climbing, scuba diving or origami.

3. Fantasy photo shoot.
Hire a professional photographer who has a flair for originality, and then choose an imaginative way to capture yourselves on film - at a scenic park, by the waterfront, by a favourite monument, on a bridge, on a boat. Try some fun, zany poses, and dress up in offbeat costumes - why not get decked out as your favourite Hollywood couple?

I don't think any of these ideas are good at all. The "5 Ways To Enjoy Valentines" should be how you can get closer and etc. to the one you love the most.

How about all us lonely valentines who's partners are thousands of miles away, maybe in the forces, whom we cannot be with. What ideas do you have for us?

"Holiday Marketing Machine", EXACTLY! When did the celebration of LOVE become an added expense? I love your article and the ideas that you give for celebrating this special day.

Seriously? I can't think of a single man who would enjoy making origami, dressing up and taking pictures, or doing a relationship scavenger hunt. This sounds like a nightmare to even me. This was clearly was written by a woman who is out of touch with what men want.

Thank you Em, I really wouldn't enjoy any of those things. I think most guys would much prefer a nice steak dinner and going out to a sporting event.

I think to keep BOTH sides happy - you gotta do MUTUAL things to keep it spiced up. MAYBE the dudes that are too macho to show their love the rest of the year can HOLD HANDS with their spouse in public. This still baffles me WHY guys dont do that more often. I am PROUD to have my spouse on my arm - maybe a walk thru one of the MANY forest trails - pack a lunch, have a picnic (yes even in winter!) Inside the forest, its MUCH warmer than you'd think. I also think instead of the typical flowers (that to me, are a quick thoughtless gesture - for the most part)...try spending quality time outdoors, and buy her a nice hat/scarf/gloves or hey how bout a horse/wagon ride under a nice blanket? As for those who arent NEAR their spouse - take a video of yourself - with the kids too if you have them - and send it via internet - todays world has NO excuses. Show them that you love them and that they are with you ALWAYS. It will bring tears to their eyes, and it is THOUGHTFUL!....ok, i'm done babbling.....Happy Valentines Day everybody!

Em, you crack me up! Well said! As a woman reading these suggestions I was thinking to myself - seriously.... origami... dress-up? I don"t even want to do these things, let alone a guy.

whatever happened to giving each other a hug and a kiss and thanking each other for being apart of each others life. For the people whose significant other is away fighting or working or what...be thankful for what you have. Love knows no boundries, one way or another you will be back together and emotions will take over. Good old fasioned love where did it go?
