Fun in the snow activities, 1-5
Remember being a kid and wishing for snow days? Now you're more likely to curse the driving conditions. Kids have great things to look forward to when the snow falls -- secret snow forts, snowball fights, and tobogganing with friends. Want the adult version that allows you to embrace a winter wonderland? Here are 10 fun things to do this winter:
1. See the northern lights
Grab the kids, a few sleeping bags, some folding chairs and a thermos of hot chocolate, and head off to a field or park in the country. Set up in the middle of the field, look up, and introduce your family to one of Canada's natural wonders.
2. Have a snowball fight
Remember how much fun it was to chase your friends around, snowball in hand? Playfully hit someone with a snowball in the back and let him or her know it's time to revive the snowball fight. The best part of this game is that kids and adults love it, everything can be a fort, and it gives you a reason to wish for that big, fluffy packing snow.
3. Go urban cross-country skiing
In Winnipeg, urban cross-country skiing is a favourite nighttime pastime
(Winnipeg is home to one of the longest trails in Canada, the 7.5 km trail in the Windsor Park Golf Course). But you don't need official sanction -- a local park works just as well. Get your old cross-country skis and go out with a friend for this unique winter exercise.
4. See a festival
Canada's bursting with festivals to get the family out and celebrate the
season. See the parades at Carnaval in Quebec City, go for a sleigh ride at the Festival de Voyageur in Winnipeg, or skate down the Rideau Canal at Winterlude. Whatever you decide, the excitement is sure to make you forget the cold weather.
5. Go tobogganing
"The breeze, the thrill of going fast, and the sun on your face," is the appeal of tobogganing, says Barry Lozinsky, the River Valley Team Leader, who grooms the hills in Edmonton for their tykes on sleds. With the help of newer, high-tech sleds, steering is now possible and provides a safer ride.
