Santa drives a taxi cab

December is a great time to reflect on all the joys that make life wonderful. Holiday specials on television and Christmas carols on the radio illustrate what a lovely season it can be. However, the time to reflect often gets overlooked and pushed out of the way as the hustle and bustle of Christmas errands keep many of us preoccupied with what to get, rather than with what to give.

Good intentions are often marred by the tendency to fight over the last parking spot, the last sweater and the last toy, yet Christmas seems to bring out both the best and worst of people.

To show that the good really does outweigh the bad, especially at Christmas, we asked readers to share their stories of Christmas kindness. Here are just a few letters that warmed our hearts, and will hopefully spread the Christmas spirit.

Santa drives a taxi cab
From Cathy Sarson:
My story is not about a Christmas gift of kindness given to me personally but rather gifts given to MANY by my dear late cousin Leonard. Dear Len, who passed away in March, 1999 at the age of 72, was a cab driver for many, many years in busy downtown Toronto.

Len's outlook on life was always to help as many people as possible, as often as possible. This was especially true during the holiday season when even on Christmas Eve, Len would often work for as long as 10 hours a day, no matter what the weather.

Many of Len's fares were festive and in the holiday mood. Others would perhaps be tired and stressed from holiday preparations and were anxious to reach their destinations.

In any case, rides would all have the same happy endings: with smiles from the passengers and Len as he would announce that the ride was free and wish them a Merry Christmas.

Perhaps someone reading this now might have once been a recipient of Len's gift of kindness by riding in his cab and are now smiling as they remember a Christmas Eve gone by.

Thanks for this article. I am up before the rest of the household, having some quiet time before embarking on another non-stop day as the calendar moves toward Christmas. These stories touched me and gave me a feeling of peace and good will toward men!

Thanks for an early Christmas gift! I was sitting here in the mostly still-dark house before anyone else was up and having a bout of Grinchiness. I guess I needed reminding that there are lots of people who live the Christmas spirit, and not only at this time of year. The season has gotten so very commercial that it is more an irritant and a stress than a joy. Being reminded that the season is based on a principle other than greed is a welcome focus adjustment. Thanks!

I loved all the Christmas Kindness stories. These are my favourite types of stories and we definitely need more of them.

Thank you so much!! It takes considerable effort to maintain the true spirit of Christmas if we just focus on the material -- the greed and excess. These stories remind us there is so much more that really matters -- love and kindness.

12 days before X-mas and not in the holiday mood. I read all these stories. It makes me grateful for what I have. And I wish for a kinder world and peace.

Thanks for Santa Drives a Taxi Cab!!! Cathy Sarson, your cousin Leonard was a True Blessing to everyone he met, especially at Christmas and New Year's. My husband and I, and another young couple went out celebrating on New Year's Eve years ago and we decided to take a taxi home. Our taxi driver was very friendly, humorous, quite knowledgeable, a terrific conversationalist and very interested in his fares. We could tell he really enjoyed his job and meeting people (I am sure he was a blessing to everyone he met on any day of the year). When we arrived home, we were surprised and delighted when he said, "The ride was free and Have a Happy New Year!" We thanked him profusely. As we were young families with our first homes, it was a terrific New Year's gift to us. We wondered how he could do that, as he probably had a family of his own to support. It was wonderful and your cousin, Leonard was a very kind person. I hope you read this and pass it along to some of his immediate family.

I hope these stories inspire your readers to be one of those "angels". I have been -- and strive to continue to be -- and the feeling you get is undescribable! Even small things like holding open a door, saying Thanks to a store clerk etc. are all little things that take no time at all to help make someone else's day just a little bit better.

all these christmas stories remind me of a christmas story my parents told me, about when they were first married, they were totally broke for my first christmas which was their second christmas together, my dad was working like 3 jobs and they had just enough money for a little bit of groceries and one christmas gift for me, they went to my grandparents house for christmas dinner, when they returned there was boxes of food, and christmas gifts for them and me. There was also a little money tucked inside and a note that said merry christmas, no one ever took credit for that christmas miracle, but every year we try to carry on the tradition, by either giving to someone we know or just by donating to the food bank. It makes christmas the more special and the best part is knowing that someone else is being helped.
