New Year's resolutions

Making -- and often breaking -- a New Year's resolution is a time-honoured tradition that caps off the holiday season. A new year marks a fresh start so it's no wonder we promise to better ourselves by taking care of our bodies, minds and spirits.

In October, the minds of Homemakers staff are tuned into the new year, as we "wrap up" the December/January issue in time for you to get your hands on holiday recipes, decorating and gift ideas well before the holidays descend on your household. With minds focused on the new year, here's what some members of the Homemakers team are striving for in the year ahead.

Fun, fun, fun!
I want to create more fun in my life and the lives of my friends, family and co-workers.
-Catherine Gray, director of English consumer websites

Working with nature
In tribute to my grandparents, who have done immense amounts of valuable volunteer work, I would like to be involved in an environmental group, particularly one that works to protect habitat for fragile populations such as Canada's songbirds.
- Jessica Ross, executive editor

Balanced living
I'm planning to resolve to work a little less and make more time in my schedule for my husband, family and friends. Life's too short to spend it all at my desk.
-Tina Anson Mine, managing editor

More energy
I'm tired of being tired! So I figure I need to expend some energy to get more energy. I plan to incorporate more activity in my daily routine, whether it's going for a walk at lunch or joining a yoga class. I've already scouted out my neighborhood and was pleasantly surprised by all the different exercise options I have right outside my front door.
-Dayna Boyer, assistant web editor

Real change
My resolution is, well, to not have resolutions but rather to focus on small goals that are not tied to a specific time or brought on by the euphoria of a 'fresh new start'. This way I will be more apt to keep them because they will not be resolutions but rather a new approach to life, integrated into my lifestyle.
-Olga Brilant, national sales manager

Get back ohm
My New Year's resolution is to start yoga classes again!
-Jessica Ungerman, assistant editor, fashion & decor

Money management
My new year's resolution is to get myself in financial shape. Now that I'm a single mom I have to take responsibility for my financial future -- which is pretty scary!
-Suzanne LaCorte, associate art director

Satisfy my inner bookworm
Read more books -- if I ever get enough free time.
-Lynn Chambers, publisher

Clock control
To get a real handle on effective time management.
-Janine Falcon, senior editor, beauty
