Festivals on the island
Known as the birthplace of Confederation because it was the first meeting place of the Fathers of Confederation, Charlottetown works to maintain its roots in architecture, culture and music. A small, bustling city overlooking a natural harbour, Charlottetown boasts rich heritage and a dedication to maintaining its reputation as the entertainment capital of Prince Edward Island. You won't have to look far for ways to fill your vacation days; but to help you get started, here are some highlights you won't want to miss. Atlantic Superstore Festival of Lights
June 30 - July 3, 2006
The Festival of Lights is a three-day, four-night party -- touted as the largest Canada Day celebration east of Ottawa. This event offers all the party essentials, starting with nightly concerts starring The Tragically Hip, The Sam Roberts Band, 3 Days Grace among others. There will be international buskers, a food fair, a carnival, and, of course, fireworks (the largest display in Atlantic Canada). If you want a vacation where you won't have to plan or travel far to be entertained, check out the festival of lights.

Prince Edward Island International Shellfish Festival
September 15 - 17, 2006
If you consider yourself to be a foodie, you might want to hold off on scheduling that Island visit until the fall. The weather will be just as lovely, and the food at the festival will make it worth the wait. Described as a “great big kitchen party,” there will also be Maritime entertainment on hand. But the real draw is, of course, the food. From chowder competitions to oyster-shucking demos to shellfish sampling, you won't go home hungry.
