Crafts and heritage

Newfoundland is the first province in Canada to celebrate the New Year, and its residents certainly know how to celebrate. After taking part in an official "Screech-in" and becoming an honorary Newfie, you may want to take a break from the great nightlife. Not to worry -- there's plenty more to do on the Rock. From outdoor adventures to fine art and handmade crafts, you won't run out of unique experiences on your vacation. To help you start planning, here are a few of the best attractions Newfoundland has to offer.

Fine Craft and Design Fair, St. John's
Snap up unique handmade gifts made by artisans and craftspeople from across Newfoundland. The Craft Council is hosting the 32nd annual Fine Craft and Design Fair 2006 at the St. John's Convention Centre from November 16 to 19, 2006. With over 100 booths, you're guaranteed to cross a few people off your gift list -- or maybe you'll find something that's perfect for you.

Newfoundland Coastal Safari, St. John's
Looking to trade in the nine to five existence for a wild adventure? Sign up for an eight-day all-inclusive safari trip and explore Newfoundland off the beaten track. Featuring small groups, Coastal Safari will have you kayaking, fishing and hiking in Fortune Bay. Best of all? You'll get authentic outdoor adventures, without completely roughing it -- you'll "camp" in real beds, wake up to hot showers and eat gourmet meals. There are also three- and five-day safaris for travellers who are short on time.

Labrador Heritage Museum
The Labrador Heritage Museum is a historic building that housed a Hudson's Bay Company store in the 1920s. The museum and its nearly 1,000 artifacts are part of the Labrador Heritage Society, an initiative formed in 1973 to preserve, protect and promote the rich culture and heritage of Labrador's history and people. The Hudson's Bay Company, around which the community was built, is featured prominently, with original storefronts and signage restored and displayed in the museum.

Art, storytelling and the outdoors

Iceberg Tours
Overcome your Titanic-inspired fear of icebergs by taking a drive along Iceberg Alley –- where you can see two- and three-storey icebergs along the Atlantic Ocean. Iceberg Alley stretches from the east coast of Labrador to the west coast of Newfoundland, and there are plenty of scenic iceberg-strewn drives along the way to choose from.

The Art Gallery of Newfoundland and Labrador
The AGNL is a wholly owned corporation of Memorial University of Newfoundland. It is run by a board of directors appointed by the general community and the university. The corporate structure and new name were established in 1994, replacing Memorial University Art Gallery, established by the university in 1961 as part of its community outreach activities. The AGNL is the largest public gallery in the province. It is the de facto provincial art gallery and is an active member of the national network of approximately 120 public and university galleries and 1,700 museums. The AGNL's primary focus in exhibiting, touring, collecting and publishing is on contemporary Canadian art, with a specific commitment to the visual arts of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Gros Morne National Park of Canada, Rocky Harbour
Gros Morne National Park of Canada was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 and is an area of great natural beauty with a rich variety of scenery, wildlife and recreational activities. Visitors can hike through wild, uninhabited mountains and camp by the sea. Boat tours bring visitors under the towering cliffs of a freshwater fjord carved out by glaciers. Waterfalls, marine inlets, sea stacks, sandy beaches and colourful nearby fishing villages complete the phenomenal natural and cultural surroundings of Gros Morne National Park of Canada.

St. John's Storytelling Festival
The St. John's Folk Arts Council is proud to present the second St. John's Storytelling Festival -- a five-day celebration of the art and tradition of storytelling. Storytellers from around the city, across the island and the mainland come together to share stories for listeners of all ages. Join the fun and see why storytelling is one of our most entertaining and enduring forms of expression.

Change Islands and Fogo Island
Catch the ferry to Change Islands and explore this historic fishing community from another era -- until 1965, there were no motor vehicles on the island. Buy ingredients for a picnic lunch at the general store. Sail over to Fogo Islands, and spend an afternoon exploring hiking trails with names like Eastern Tickle and Wild Cove. Be sure to check out the many artifacts around the small island, each representing its own bit of folklore.
