Quebec farmer's markets

Markets hold a special place in the cultural fabric of Quebec, with many dating back decades and, in some cases, centuries. Blending old-world charm with modern-day sensibilities, they offer a shopping experience unique to the Canadian landscape. So, put on your comfiest shoes and say bonjour to one of these farmer's markets filled with delicious delights.

Atwater Market
www.marche-atwater.com
Where: 138 Atwater Ave., south of Notre Dame Street, in Montreal
When: Open all year, seven days a week; check website for hours.
Why: Housed in an historic Art Deco building, this indoor market was established in 1933 and features two floors filled with a wide variety of vendors.
What: A gourmand's heaven, wares for sale range from fresh fish and eggs, to cheese, olive oils, locally grown seasonal produce (including cranberries) and chocolates. There are also butchers on site, offering meat products, including more exotic fare like rabbit and duck.

Jean-Talon Market
www.marche-jean-talon.com
Where: 7070 Henri-Julien St. in Montreal
When: Open seven days a week, from May to October; check website for hours.
Why: Sitting smack dab in the heart of a residential area, this is one of the largest outdoor public markets on the continent and boasts a massive customer base, making it a regional attraction for shoppers, tourists and locals alike. Shop early and shop often!
What: Surrounded by a number of permanent specialty shops, the market -- expanded in 2004 to accommodate its growing popularity -- welcomes local farmers through the summer and fall. They set up outdoor stalls and sell corn, tomatoes, apples, beans, strawberries, herbs, onions, garlic and an assortment of fresh-cut flowers.

Lachine Market

Where: 1865 Notre Dame St. at 18th Avenue in Montreal
When: Open year-round, seven days a week; check website for hours.
Why: Built in 1845, destroyed by fire in 1866, rebuilt in 1909 and recently renovated, the Lachine Market is the oldest public market in Montreal. It includes its own restaurant (Le café du marché) on site and a public square.
What: Smaller and more intimate than some of Montreal's other markets, Lachine offers gourmet fare including wild-game meats, imported cheeses, sausages, fresh-baked breads and other baked goods.

Maisonneuve Market

Where: 4445 Ontario St. in Montreal
When: Open all year, seven days a week; check website for hours.
Why: Once housed in a gorgeous Beaux-Arts building nearby, the market has endured an on-again, off-again status since its founding in the early 1900s. Closed between 1962 and 1980, the market is once again thriving, featuring 40 outdoor stalls and a dozen indoor shops.
What: Take your pick from a selection of fresh fish and crab, meat products, honey, cheese and seasonal fruits and vegetables. The market also hosts “Organic Saturdays,” where organic farmers take centre stage, from August through October.
