More and more, women of all ages are becoming interested in golfing. Why not? Golfing is the perfect summer sport: it takes skill and intelligence without too much strenuous effort.

The lessons
In order to avoid exasperating your golfing companions, a novice must take lessons. Claude Allen is the director of the golf club Le Versant in Terrebonne, Quebec, where 30 per cent of his clients are women. He estimates that five lessons are sufficient to familiarize oneself with the game. Women often make the best students, says to Serge Ginchereau, a professional trainer who established a women's league at Laval's Club UFO. "Women are more structured, they want to learn everything there is to know about technique," he explains. The equipment
Experts suggest you rent your equipment before jumping into an expense that is just as exorbitant as ski equipment. After all, you have to make sure you like it first!

• Before you make any purchases or rentals, make sure you know whether you're a lefty or a righty.
• It will cost about $250 to purchase your basic equipment, which includes a putter, your "woods" 1-3-5 and "irons" 4-5-6-7-8-9.
• According to Ginchereau, beginners can also make do with a half-package containing the putter, the "woods" 1-3 and the "irons" 5-9-7.

Start with a shorter course
Once you're fully equipped and have familiarized yourself with the basic techniques, you're ready for the green. Keep in mind there is some basic golfing etiquette that you should heed. It is recommended that beginners start with a shorter course (9 holes rather than 18) and chose a par-3, meaning a course where it takes about 3 tries to get the ball into the hole.

Reap the rewards
Once you are well prepared, it doesn't take long to become addicted. After all, golf is an outdoor sport that allows you to relax, meet people and enjoy the summer sun.
