Cribs & Toddler Beds that Create the Sweetest Dreams

Cribs

Expecting a baby is an exciting time in life, and a major milestone is selecting your baby’s crib. It is, after all, their first bed. A traditional crib that passes from child to child gives the nursery the classic feel and you can update its look easily with decor and bedding. A convertible crib can grow with them, even into their early teen years. These are easy to identify because the back panel is often a solid piece that looks like a headboard.

Classic Cribs:  Spindles, Colors and Brass

Cribs are the biggest elements in a nursery and set the vibe. Scandinavian simplicity or traditional spindle rails change a look by themselves, even when the wall color and decor remain the same. Brass is popular once again and lends a sense of elegance to a nursery.

Convertible Crib

Convertible or transitional cribs are fabulous because they grow with your child. This is especially nice if you don’t see a future need for the crib. Bed rail accessories are now common with cribs transforming them into twin toddler beds. Change out the crib mattress for a full-sized mattress on cribs built with a headboard, and it may see your kid through high school. Bedding changes the style of the room, making it easy to stay on trend.

Toddler Beds that Build Imagination

Toddler beds are not only fun, they’re also fun-sized. They typically fit a crib sized mattress, so if the crib isn’t being passed down to a new little one, you can simply put that same mattress into the new bed box. Toddler beds inspire imagination in play as they can be racing cars, tractors, and tents, and even a tiny library with a scribble desk and toy storage.

Bedding to Layer in Fun

Children’s bedding selection might seem like an easy task for a kid’s room, but think again. If you’ve  determined a theme in which the primary piece of furniture is a race car, a busy pattern might overwhelm the room. Consider solid color bedding that aligns with the color elements from the bed and on the walls.

Conversely, if the bed is a solid color or wood finish, prints can really liven up a space and express your child’s personality. Throws and toss pillows will add a special touch, then you can leave the rest of the design character to the dresser, decor and other accessories.

Remember, for safety purposes, cribs should have very little bedding and no pillows. A fitted sheet and a good swaddle are all that are needed for the better part of that first year.

Mattresses Made for Babies and Toddlers

Just like grownups, developing babies and toddlers need a supportive mattress. Baby mattresses have some of the same material and cooling features found in one built for adults . Of course, babies and toddlers run a higher risk of staining a mattress, so look for one with an easily removable and washable, natural fiber cover such as organic cotton, wool, or coir.

Core Mattress Fillers:

Innerspring (Coils): Look for a coil count of 150 or greater with edge support to prevent sagging.

Foam (Polyurethane): Should be a high-density foam that feels  heavy. If it feels light or can bend easily it will lack adequate support.

Safety Standard Certifications for Mattresses

CPSC Compliance: Mattresses must meet the strict safety standards set by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

GREENGUARD Gold Certification: Ensures the mattress has been tested for low chemical emissions, contributing to cleaner indoor air quality in the nursery.

CertiPUR-US Certification: A certification for foam mattress that guarantees the foam is made without harmful chemicals, heavy metals, harmful ozone substances, or prohibited phthalates.

GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) / GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard): Look for these if you are shopping specifically for organic cotton, wool, or latex materials.
