Red currants may not be as well known as other members of the berry family, but they're certainly no slouch in the nutrition they supply. In fact, they outdo strawberries and blueberries in fibre and iron content. And, like other berries, they also offer vitamin C and potassium. One cup of red currants almost matches the potassium content of one banana.

Their beautiful colour offers more than just eye appeal. The red pigment, called anthocyanin, provides a range of health perks. It acts as an antioxidant and has an anti-inflammatory action -- both of which may lower the odds of getting many common illnesses, such as heart disease and stroke, as well as some cancers. And research is showing red currants also have anti-microbial effects, making sense of their age-old use as an antiseptic for cuts and burns.
